A clinical decision support system is a tool that assists nurses and other health practitioners in decision making and keeps records and relevant information of patients. Nurses make different decisions from doctors; therefore, they require a specialized clinical decision support system to help in their decision making. Nurses telephone triage is an example of the nursing-based CDSS we have at work. This is a system designed for nurses where they can monitor patients’ symptoms using standardized procedures over the telephone and decide on the best course of action. The benefits of using telephone triage include: it saves on cost spent on medical care, promotes organized, efficient, and urgent care to patients, and enable nurses to give better advice using the evidence-based protocols. The limitations involve the risk of fewer experience nurses giving unreliable advice to patients through telephone triage, inconsistency in the documentation of patients’ records, and it lacks visual cues. For nurses to be able to use the telephone triage, proper and adequate training efficiently is necessary. The problem of ethical, legal liability also rose, where most nurses using telephone triage failed to document the records of patients advised through the telephone. This act is ethically unlawful and goes against the nurses’ code of conduct (Dale, 2019) Successful emergency telephone triage is dependent on using a well-established protocol supported by a CDSS and well-trained staff (Montandon et al., 2019). Typically, information about symptoms, medications, and previous illnesses are entered into a CDSS and a priority and measures are recommended.

Kate, I liked that you posted a picture of your new portable pulse oximeter. It seems t be very handy. In the picture I can compare it with the size of your thumb and it’s obvious how small it is. It’s very wise that your unit has labeled them so if they were left somewhere it can be returned. I’m sure medical electronics devices are very expensive. Great post. Thank you for sharing.
