Activity 3 – Inclusion in our Alberta Context
A significant part of our understanding of disability is considering the language we use to describe it. The text introduces the idea of ‘person-first’ language and invites us to consider how labeling someone based on their abilities or disabilities might cause us to see that label as the whole of the child’s identity. Reflecting on how we use language and the impact it has on how we relate to the children in families in front of us is a key beginning for our inclusion journey.
The text gives us a general picture of what inclusion is and its evolution in the Canadian context, but it is important to consider how disability and inclusion are framed in our guiding documents.
Review the Alberta Childcare Licensing Regulation, the Alberta Flight Framework, and AECEA (links below).
In your discussion post, comment specifically on the presence or absence of people-first language and specific references to disability and/or inclusion. How might this presence or absence impact our practices with and assumptions about children with disabilities?
