Introduction to Geography Nassau Community College Textile Industry Exercise The clothes in your closet represent a database of geographic information, as clothes are made in many locations around the world. Analyzing this database will allow you to learn some important lessons about the relative level of development of these countries and the locational pattern of the textile industry. In addition to the Data Table, Map and Analysis Paper you will need to submit thumbnail pictures of the labels from your data set. You should be able to put 20 or so images per page in Microsoft Word. For every category that has data, you need to submit a thumbnail image of the label. For example, if you have 12 shirts, 4 pants, 7 shoes and 1 jacket made in China, I will need to see 1 label from each category, so you would submit 1 shirt, 1 pant, 1 shoe and 1 jacket label showing Made in China?. If you had 2 pants made in Mexico, and not other clothing made in Mexico, you would only need to provide one example of a Made in Mexico? label. Data Collection Using your own everyday clothing, check the following four types of clothing for the country of origin: 1) Shirts and/or blouses 2) Pants and/or skirts and/or dresses 3) Shoes and/or boots 4) Coats and/or jackets. If you have a small wardrobe, you may wish to expand your data collection by using another person’s clothes in addition to your own. The more labels you check, the more likely that you will be able to detect the underlying pattern. Ideally, you will have 50-100 total data points (i.e. clothing items) and no less than 5 items in each category. For each category of garment, keep track of the number of items produced in each country or territory (e.g. Puerto Rico). While the former colonies of Hong Kong and Macau are now both part of China, keep separate data for these two places. If the label says something like, “Assembled in Country X of components from Country Y”, use the country of final assembly in your data. Some items of clothing, particularly shoes, may not show the country of origin in which case you should create a row for “unknown origin.” Data Organization In addition to the written summary, you must submit your data in two forms. First, using either a spreadsheet program or a handwritten table, list the countries as rows and the four clothing types as columns. You should create a fifth column for the total number of clothing items produced by each country, and another row for the totals of each column. Each square or “cell” of the table should show the number (Arabic numerals rather than tick marks) of clothing items of a particular category of clothing made in a particular country or territory. Other than these few instructions about designing the data table, you are free to organize the table as you see fit. However, think about how you might organize the rows (countries) to make the spatial patterns more readily apparent. All the data should be presented on a single page for ease in evaluating the information. Second, you must make a simple map using the blank world map provided to you. Color in the territory of all countries included in your data set to help determine the spatial pattern of clothing production. Use an atlas to determine the location of all countries and territories found in your data set.

Using class concepts write a 2-3 page essay addressing the topic given above along with any overall analysis of the geography of the textile industry. The essay will be graded on the basis of the content (information, coherence, persuasiveness) as well as written expression (organization, word choice, spelling, grammar). Proper completion of the data table and map will also be considered. Requirements ?
