Carefully listen to the way Pollock describes his creative process and produce a list of words, descriptions, and ideas that most stand out for you. Now describe THREE ways that Pollock likely shocked and/or challenged the way traditional painters made art in his time.
2. Open and watch the Museum of Modern Art’s video “How to paint like Jackson Pollock” : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EncR_T0faKM
You will now be introduced to a critical interpretation and demonstration of Pollock’s painting technique as “action painting.” Identify and describe some of the important ideas raised in this video about the how “action painting” is defined, and why it was considered so important and potentially influential. Carefully cite the minute mark in brackets of your observations.
3. Open and watch an art historical interpretation of Jackson Pollock’s Autumn Rhythm (1950):
Carefully listen to two art historians discuss and analyze Pollock’s artwork in important historical context. Identify and describe FOUR ways that they discuss how abstract expressionism was understood as relevant and much needed as a new kind of art form in the immediate aftermath of WWII. Carefully cite the minute mark in brackets of your observations.
4. In the Module 2 Prezi lecture, I introduce the idea of how Pollock’s paintings would become a kind of cultural propaganda to promote American ideals and notions of democracy around the world, and to counter fascist and communist critiques of modern art. What do you make of this idea and what we discussed in class? Does this surprise you, and/or challenge how you understand abstract painting? Take a look at the final slide of the Prezi where we juxtaposed Pollock’s Autumn Rhythm with a work of Soviet Socialist Realism that glorifies the communist leader Joseph Stalin. Do you think it is a fair comparison to consider both of these artworks as forms of propaganda? What is potentially “dangerous” about Pollock’s painting?
