Introduction:
I am a paramedic and a lecturer at the Emergency Medical Services department in a local university in SA, which I will draw upon for this PhD research. Through the paramedical research area, it will allow a deeper understanding of how patient and bystander violence influence paramedics and their continuity in their profession, as well as investigate their views and experiences regarding this issue. As part of this piece, I outline the aims, objectives, suggested study design, and expected timeframe of my PhD research.
Research topic:
Santos et al. (2007) recommend using the PICO tool to develop research topics. PICO is composed of four components: population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (See Table 1).

Aims:
To Identify how patient and bystander violence influence paramedics and explore their views and experiences regarding this issue.
Objectives:
1.Conducting a literature review about the topic-area.
2. Investigating interviews with the paramedics to explore their experiences and views regarding the impacts of patient and bystander violence.
3.Undertaking a questionnaire based on the qualitative study findings to gain in-depth understanding about the issue or phenomenon.
4.Producing recommendations based on the findings for future practice.
Proposed study design:
I will apply the following suggested methodology:
1.Conducting a systematic review to identify the relevant current gaps regarding patient and bystander violence against paramedics.
2.Qualitative study: conducting interviews with the paramedics using semi-structured interviews.
3.Quantitative study: spreading questionnaire and conducting this study in paramedics based on the qualitative studys findings.
4.Integrating the findings of the qualitative and quantitative findings to obtain in-depth understanding of this issue using the exploratory sequential mixed methods design.
Study timeline:
I will study my PhD in three years as a full-time student from this academic year 2023. the PhD first year will include: research proposal development, a literature review; the second year will involve: data collection and analysis; the third year to include: thesis-writing stage and dissemination of results.
