religion question
If you are a believer in Christ then we are called to submit to Jesus’ Lordship over our lives (confessing that Jesus is our Savior and our Lord). With that in mind as you think through journalism, what biblical Truths and commandments should guide you in your career? How can you live as a light in the dark world (even the world wide web world)? How can you write in a way that reflects the image of God? If you are not a believer in Christ, still look through Scripture to find what the Bible says about speech, words, treating others.

Ever since childhood, I have held an affinity for writing. I knew that my future would incorporate writing in some way, shape, or form, and it is only now that I see how that passion and practice comes together into a feasible way of life. When considering the Christian faith in conjunction with journalism, written communication, etc., I think about two things: Gods emphasis on community and our individual uniqueness as people.
We see many references to the importance of community in the Bible. Proverbs line on iron sharpening iron, Matthew 18s notation on the Spirits presence with believers who gather, and Romans description of the body of Christ. One verse that sticks out to me regarding the theme of community is 1 Peter 4: 8-11, which says:
Above all, love each other deeply,?because love covers over a multitude of sins.?Offer hospitality?to one another without grumbling.?Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,?as faithful?stewards of Gods grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.?If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides,?so that in all things God may be praised?through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.?
In my perspective, anyone can build a skill in writing, but not every person will harbor a passion for it. Not every person will feel a call to pursue writing in their life. The beauty of our humanity lies in the diversity of Gods creation. Thus, we all hold diverging and converging passions and skillsets. A thriving community knows the value in this diversification as well as the importance of hospitality and humbleness. This verse reminds me that our passions are ultimately not for ourselves, but for Gods glory and the stewardship of His creation, including people. Journalism, copywriting, publishing, etc. all contain the potential – for those who hold a passion for them – to glorify God and build up the community. I personally think the protection and stewardship of ones community has been neglected and something in need of renewal. I draw inspiration for my own career (and however it incorporates writing) from that need to re-emphasize community and love one another as God commands us.

This is an interesting question. When it comes to just living my daily life, I strive to reflect the image of God, but I know that I am human, and I know that I will fail at times. So for me, when it comes to communication, that looks like trying to do my best to love others, sharing the truth regardless of the circumstance, in a way that is filled with love and grace. During those times I try to share the truth in love but end up failing, I get back up as quickly as I can and seek forgiveness from those around me and from my heavenly Father. The world says to do differently, and the media that fills it says differently even more so.?
I think that when it comes to reflecting the image of God in the way that we as believers write, it ultimately comes down to what Paul wrote about working unto the Lord in his letter to the Colossians. “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Colossians 3:23 ESV). When we do what we do, we need to do it for the One who has made us and loved us since before we were even an idea. Yes, in the world, our audience will be people (and they are not guaranteed to love what we have to say) but our primary audience will always be God. I have heard it said, “audience of One.” When we live and write to reflect the image of God, we need to do so with the audience of One in mind.?
Words are important. I mean, if they weren’t then I highly doubt we would use them on a daily basis. They are one of the primary ways that we as humans communicate with one another. Ecclesiastes 10:12 says, “the words of a wise man’s mouth win him favor, but the lips of a fool consume him” (ESV). Reading this verse is a good reminder of the power that words hold. It also ties right back to the previous verse found in Colossians. When all that we do is unto the Lord, we are living in the grace of His love and wisdom. It is likely that we will then take on more and more of His characteristics. Because of this, it can be more likely that we speak with the wisdom given to us by the Father. However, when we rely on our own strength and knowledge, working for our own glory, the opposite will happen. We will be more likely to speak foolishly, hurting those we care about and hurting ourselves via the sin that we let rule us.?
As we begin this semester, one that will be?full?of writing, we need to be wise with the words that we speak and write (or type), communicating love in a truthful manner. We need to make sure that what we do is not for the approval of our classmates or professors, but for the most important audience of One.

In thinking through the questions posed, first and foremostly, the Bible teaches us to always tell the truth. In telling the truth, we must work hard to not have any bias. As journalists, one should find and communicate truth. In the often-quoted verse of John 8:32, Jesus says, And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.? When truth is not communicated, we become captive to falsehood. Jesus also said, I am the Way the Truth and the Life? (John 14:6). God, through Jesus, is the ultimate truth and that is the place from which we should start. Hearing only one side of a story is misleading. Reporters should go to great lengths to get all sides of every story. Non-bias reporting is what journalism originally taught and what it should still be teaching. However, it is certainly not these days. Rather than report fact, even the headlines use adjectives suitable for editorials rather than for objective, factual reporting.?
Also, the Bible commands honesty and integrity. In journalism, as in any career, and in life in general, your reputation is the most important thing you can possess. Especially in journalism, your reputation is paramount for your readers. Proverbs 22:1 says, A good name is to be more desired than great wealth.? To be a successful Christian journalist, we must have a track record of truthful and reliable reporting. The Society of Professional Journalism still touts the goal of ethical journalism and that it should be accurate and fair. Journalists should be honest and courageous in gathering, reporting, and interpreting information. However, it seems that in the past few years we have fallen away from all of these basic tenets.
If somehow, we fail, journalists should admit their mistakes and run corrections. This is consistent with biblical teaching about humility. James 4:6 says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.? It is crucial to correct errors quickly and to be transparent with readers and sources about the changes. Corrections are even frowned upon these days, but the purpose is to not to serve one side or position, but rather to serve the audience with truth.
Journalists should not compromise. A journalist accepting money or a gift in exchange for positive news coverage violates his or her trust with the audience. Any improper influence?even if only a relationship and not money?can affect impartial reporting. The Bible makes it clear that God does not condone compromising. Joyful are those who do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in His paths? (Psalm 119:3).
Finally, the way we treat others should be the way Jesus treated them. We might find ourselves cheering on a Tucker Carlson, for example, when he calls a liberal a moron.? And maybe this gets him more viewers. But the Ephesians 4:29 says, Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.?
Sadly, in todays world, journalists are often only bias, one-sided, polarizing forces working toward evil outcomes. We should work hard to stick to Biblical principals in order to truly be light in this dark world.
