CHE 320 Milestone 1
January 15, 2023
My interviewee Muriel Roberts is my mother. She has three children, one boy and two girls, and she was excited when I asked her to be a part of my homework assignment. I was going to interview her mother, my grandmother, but she was recently diagnosed with Dementia. My mom was open with her past experiences and what led to her recent health issues even though she doesnt like me to worry about her health and be concerned so much. I didnt struggle with getting responses from any of my questions and have challenges with mom for this assignment. Before her health concerns, she was athletic and always was slim because of her high metabolism, she could eat anything and not gain a pound. She was very active while she served in the United States Navy once activated for 9/11. She now is still healthy for the most part, however she does have some health concerns that slow her down, but she is a trooper, and you wouldnt know by just looking at her.
My mother is in her mid-fifties and I learned that many of her health concerns started when she was going to drill one weekend a was in a terrible car accident. She flipped her pick-up truck about 8 times, while on a bridge where they were doing construction and there was something in the road from construction that she tried to avoid, but instead her tire was hooked. Luckily, the barrier was there, or she would have flipped in the ocean. She remarkably walked out of the accident with no injuries (so we thought). Since then her primary concerns were health related: injured spinal cord and neck, tingling in the arms, and suffer from migraines. Another concern that my mother wanted to highlight would be getting closer to her retirement age and preparing for death just like discussed in Chapter 6 of our textbook. My mom has specifically a purple folder in her filing cabinet that has her entire funeral planned out, every detail you can think of. I asked my mom, why and she said because when that time comes, its inevitable, along with the family has more to think about then the stress of planning a funeral. She also said she worked all her life to make sure that was able to live comfortably during retirement and could enjoy her elderly years with her grandkids before death is near. With setting herself up in the beginning and also her family, she is able to not have to worry about her retirement and stability along with her health concerns that she may be experiencing now or in the future.
CHE 320 Milestone Two Guidelines and Rubric Overview: As a community health professional, it is important that you have knowledge of the primary concerns of the aging population. Today, the aging population comprises a substantial percentage of the total population, so it is likely that you will come into contact with them as you work in the field. You can learn more about the statistics of the aging population in the Module One overview. Prompt: This milestone should encompass Section I: Introduction and Section II: Perspectives of the final project. As you complete research to support the current versus historical perspectives analysis and comparison, you will need to use the Shapiro Library. This guide, Getting Started with Research@Shapiro Library, will help you begin your search for information. Specifically the following critical elements must be addressed: I. Introduction: You will set the stage for your analysis paper by comparing the primary concerns raised in the interview you conducted in a previous milestone with the primary concerns identified in the course and in your independent research. Specifically, compare the primary concerns raised by your interviewee to those discussed during this class. Consider why the identified concerns are concerns for the aging population. II. Perspectives: Now that you have analyzed multiple concerns of the aging population, you will select one primary concern on which to focus your analysis paper, comparing the historical and current perspectives of the specific concern. A. Primary Concern: Select one of the previously identified primary concerns to be the focus of the remainder of your analysis paper, explaining why you selected this specific concern. For example, you may explain that you found one concern more interesting than the others, or you may have a personal connection with a specific concern. B. Historical Perspectives: Describe the historical perspectives of the selected concern for the aging population, supporting your description with evidence. For example, what was the public perception of the concern with respect to the aging population 20 or 30 years ago? How did the aging population perceive the concern 20 or 30 years ago? Consider that the specific concern may not have been a concern for the public or aging population in the past. C. Current Perspectives: Describe the current perspectives of the selected concern for the aging population, supporting your description with evidence. For example, what is the publics perception of the concern for the aging population? D. Compare Perspectives: Compare the historical and current perspectives of the concern, citing specific similarities and differences in the perspectives. What stood out about the similarities and differences in the search? E. Potential Improvements: Identify potential improvements in the public perception of the aging population with respect to the concern, supporting your claims with evidence. If you do not feel that the public perception could be improved, justify your response with evidence.
