My first reaction to the memoir is a sadden one, that kids think they are supposed to be a dumb version from everyone else, just because of their heritage or because the world tells them they have to be. This should not be the world we live in, but it’s the reality of it. He stated in his words that “We were Indian children who were expected to be stupid. Most lived up to those expectations inside the classroom but subverted them on the outside.” I am amazed that the author did not let that deter him from learning to read and not be like his peers or what everybody expected him to be. I oved that h decided to change his live to fit what he wanted and not the world.
My own story of learning is kind of the same, we as African Americans they think we are not smart, or we only suppose to be dead or in jail. The statistics of us is bad, but I choose to be different from that level. Going back to school is showing me that no matter what I can be what I choose to be and not what they world portray me as. I have always wanted to learn how to play the guitar and people always laughed and said my kind was not supposed to be playing guitars, but I didn’t let that stop me from learning. So, I took classes and got a guitar and learned everything I know by myself.
In the Ted talk by Jiabao Li “Art that reveals how technology frames reality,” she states “Take the glasses I usually wear, for example. These have become part of the way I ordinarily experience my surroundings. I barely notice them, even though they are constantly framing reality for me. The technology I am talking about is designed to do the same thing: change what we see and think but go unnoticed.” I too wear glasses on a regular basis and sometimes I do not notice them on my face. My glasses are a step for me to see the world around me the way everybody else sees it. Without my glasses I see the world the way I would see it, a blur. Technology plays a huge factor I our lives, without it kids will lose their minds lol. Technology shows us things that we can’t see every day, it gives an insight of things around the world
Who are our superheroes? I appreciated Sherman Alexie's essay, Superman and Me, his description of learning to read through comic book stories reminded me of my love for books. He describes learning to read as an act of imagination, the illustrations of the superman comic an invitation that sparked his interest in learning, "superman is breaking down the door." Indeed, Alexie was able to use his love for learning to break down the doors of what was considered possible for him. I identified with Alexie's love for books. I grew up in a small rural town of less than a thousand. Thankfully, we had a library, a school library, and a mobile bus library that would also come—providing 1000 different worlds for me to experience. Many a day, I would read an entire book. I started with all of the Hardy Boys, and then when I finished them, I moved on to Nancy Drew. I would ravenously digest the words before bedtime, only to start a new novel the following day. My love for reading wasn't particularly valued nor expressly discouraged other than sometimes getting in trouble for reading books under the covers with a flashlight into the late nighttime hours.
In Alexie's essay, Alexie is Superman; he is attempting to break down the doors of expectation of what is possible and expand the possibilities of those on the reservation and what is possible for them. As a child, he didn't know he could be a poet or author; now, as an adult, he gives back to his community by fighting to show others that other possibilities exist. He sees their resistance and fights to convince them that other options exist beyond whatever walls may hold for them now.
The question I found most interesting from Jiabou Li's TEDTalk video is, "How much has our perception been commoditized? " The visual image of the magnification of all the web ads in her speech is a powerful example of how much advertisements inundate us and reminds me how much I lack awareness of this. I'm curious how much these ads play a large part in influencing or attempting to influence our choices. When scrolling through social media, I've often noticed how many advertisements fit in between content from friends and colleagues. While we don't always have to watch TV commercials anymore due to other options such as DVR or On demand, marketers are always trying to influence us. The idea of software highlighting how we are being advertised to would be beneficial because we could question how we act as consumers in the world and hopefully make more informed decisions. The idea of technology being used as a source of good by educating us is an exciting and important one. I hope that as our relationship with technology continues, we will create more tools to help educate us on our blind spots.
