EXAMPLE OF PAPER REVIEW:
To record the water usage, the researcher placed a digital water flow metre together with an electronic reader device to count the number of activations done by the students using the faucets. The data on the number of students who used the restrooms are manually counted but the researcher did not mention who counted it and did not justify its reliability. The researchers did not add statistical treatment of data as a part of the research, so I have to assess how the researcher presented his data in the results and discussion. The first flaw I saw is that the researcher presented the number of activation of faucets and water consumption in the whole 14 days but the researcher only presented the average men and women entering the restroom per hour, this can make a confusion for the readers on how only 60 males consumed 132 gallons to wash their hands. The researcher then proceeded to the Cost-Benefit Analysis, again, the researcher did not show the equation or solution on how she ended up with these results, so I have to break it down one by one, I will also add the results in case you want to verify. Where: (automatic faucet/automatic faucet/SSPS faucet) respectively. . Initial installation cost (USD) for state buildings: (cost per faucet. 311/311/375) +(installation time, 1.5/15/2)(hourly rate of labourers, 44.94)= (total cost per faucet. 378.41/378.41/464.88) . Initial installation cost (USD) for non-state buildings: (cost per faucet, 311/311/375)+(installation time, 1.5/1.5/2)(hourly rate of labourers, 63.36)= (total cost per faucet, 406.04/406.04/501.72) . Initial installation cost (USD), outside contractor: (cost per faucet, 311/311/375) +(installation time, 1.5/1.5/2)(hourly rate of labourers, 85)= (total cost per faucet, 438.5/ 438.5/545) Maintenance cost (USD) per faucet: (maintenance time, 1/1/1.5)(hourly rate of labourers, 40.45)= (total cost of maintenance, 40.45/40.45/60.68) Where: (manual faucet/automatic faucet/ automatic faucet/ SSPS faucet) respectively. . Water and sewer cost in USD: (average gallons used in the study, 186/128/84/128)(cost of water per gallon, 0.0018 + cost of sewer per gallon, 0.0051)/(days of study, 14)= (total cost of water and sewage per faucet per day, .09/.06/.04/.06) . Cost of water and sewage per faucet per academic year in USD: (total cost of water and sewage per faucet per day, 0.09/0.06/0.04/0.06)(days in academic year, 170) = (total cost of water and sewage per faucet per academic year, 15.3/10.2/6.8/10.2) . Savings in USD: (total cost of water and sewage of manual faucet per academic year, 15.3)- (total cost of water and sewage of faucets per academic year, 15.3/10.2/6.8/10.2) = savings, 0/5.1/8.5/5.1) Adding statistical treatment as part of your research paper would be saving a lot of time for other researchers doing a review or readers analysing your work.
A REVIEW OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH (Foreign) Do Automatic Water Faucets Actually Save Water? A Comparative Test of Manual and Automatic Water Faucets at California State University, Sacramento. Alyssa Harmon The study is aimed to comparatively evaluate the water usage of manual faucets and automatic faucets in a public setting. The author decided to conduct the study at the men’s and women’s restrooms on the second floor of the Academic Information Resource Center (AIRC) at California State University in Sacramento USA. I like how the researcher justified its research locale by stating that both the restrooms are guaranteed to have a large amount of users that will make the study more reliable. The researcher failed to mention the research design, however, the researcher did mention in the end of the introduction that it will be a comparative study, no further discussion is made to expound the topic. "To ensure that the usage volume was consistent between the three phases, people were manually counted entering the restrooms using a stratified random sampling method during peak times, which were noted as the hours between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday." Aside from mentioning their sampling technique, it would be better to justify how or why the researcher chose this specific technique to be used in the study. I do not understand why the researcher chose a non-probability sampling, not at any part of the paper mentioned that only chosen students will be allowed to use the restrooms, or only specific student’s use of restrooms are being recorded.
