DIETHYLCARBAMAZINE PHROPHYLAXIS FOR HUMAN LOIASIS To determine the effectiveness of diethylcarbamazine in preventing infection with Loa loa in temporary residents of endemic areas. We conducted a trail in which diethylcarbamazine(300mg) or placebo was taken orally once a week. The participants were assessed clinically and with serologic and parasitological testing before and yearly during the two years of service. At the end of the follow up 36 of 76 subjects in the placebo group has clinical disease, as compared with none of the 56 in the diethylcarbamazine- treated group. Association between invasive cancer of the cervix and HIV-1 infection in Tanzania: the need for dual screening. BMC Public Health. 2008 Jul 30; 8:262. Cancer of the cervix has been associated with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is sexually transmitted disease. However, the role of HIV-1 in the etiology of cancer of the cervix is less clear. We therefore conducted a study to determine the association between cancer of the cervix and HIV-1. The study was carried out in Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania between January and March 2007. The study included 138 cases with histologically confirmed carcinoma of the cervix and 138 non cancer adult women attendants or visitors. The participants were counselled and tested for HIV-1 and interviewed to assess the risk factors for cancer of the cervix and HIV-1. The results showed HIV-1 prevalence was much higher among the cases (21.0%) than among the controls (11.6%). In logistic regression, HIV-1 was associated with cancer of the cervix (OR=2.9,95% CI=1.4-5.9) in Caesarean section among referred and self-referred birthing women from a tertiary hospital, north eastern Tanzania. BMC pregnancy Childbirth. 2011 Jul 28; 11:55. Despite an existing national obstetric referral system, many birthing women by pass referring facilities and go directly to higher level care centers. We wanted to compare caesarean section (CS) rates among women formally referred to a tertiary care center versus self-referred women. Referral status was categorized as self-referred if the women has bypassed or not accessed referral, or formally referred by a health worker. Our study showed that the referral status contributed substantially to the CS rate, which was 55.0% in formally referred and 26.9% in self-referred birthing women. Women referred for delivery had higher CS rates suggesting that the formal referral system successfully identifies high-risk birth.
