Group Dynamics and Process
students will research one therapy group and one support group in their local area, and then write a 750-1250 word paper. Students do not need to actually attend the groups, just research them. (Students CAN visit groups if they choose!) Therapy groups are typically run by a professional for the purpose of treatment—these are generally found in agencies, community mental health centers, and hospitals. Support groups tend to run by non-professionals and are free; they can be mental health support groups, substance abuse support groups (AA, NA, Celebrate Recovery), grief support groups, etc. Faith-based groups are great, but Bible studies do not qualify as support groups.
The assignment is pretty broad, but students need to identify the counseling “theory” behind the group, such as cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavioral therapy, 12-steps, Kubler-Ross, etc. (The Bible is NOT a treatment theory for the purposes of this assignment.) Contact the instructor if there is a question about the group you are researching. Be sure to read through the rubric!

2. Group leader description to include the following: trained or untrained and led by members or nonmembers
3. The theory that guides the way each group is conducted
4. Would you refer anyone to either or both groups? Why or why not?
