This week, we examined the guidance approach, which helps early childhood educators do safe and supportive classroom environment and promote desirable behavior in all children.  The guidance approach is comprised of the 7 guiding principles listed below.    

Children are in the process of learning acceptable behaviors

An effective approach is preventative

Adults need to understand the reasons for children’s behavior

A supportive relationship between adult and child is critical

Adults use forms of guidance that help children learn self-control and responsiveness to others’ needs

Adults model appropriate expression of their own feelings

Adults continue to learn even as they teach

 In your discussion response this week, please address the following:

Share an example of situation involving children in the early childhood age range (birth – age 8), in which the guidance approach would be useful.  This can be a “real life” example from your own experience or an imaginary example.

Be sure to provide the approximate age of the child(ren) involved and give a brief description of what happened

Then, select at least one of the guiding principles listed above and explain how you would apply it to effectively address the scenario.

Finally, analyze why your approach would be developmentally appropriate for the child(ren) involved (e.g., why is this approach appropriate for a child at this age and/or stage of development?).
