A 1967 article in The New England Journal of Medicine blamed dietary fats, however it was not revealed at the time that the review, which discounted evidence tying sugar to blood lipid levels, was funded by the Sugar Research Foundation (SRF), it was not until the 1980s that it became a legal requirement to disclose potential conflicts of interest in research situations, so nothing illegal occurred, however, it does raise questions about the objectivity, and thus the validity, of the New England Journal of Medicine’s review.
The controversy sparked a new study in 1968 known as Project 259, with the goal to compare “the nutritional effects of bacteria organisms in the intestinal tract in rats ted sucrose versus those fed starch, which concluded that the rats did process sucrose and starches differently.
