Black Panther Movie Impact on Black America
Carvell Wallace’s critique of the Black Panther (2018) movie asserted that this movie had a direct impact on African Americans. The first reason he states is that the movie is primarily centered around mostly black characters. Secondly, it was not the only mainstream movie that portrayed black Americans, there was Creed (2015) and Coming to America (1988). These movies portrayed realistic instances where the main characters were black and placed emphasis on real life real-life experiences and what it’s like to be an African American living in the United States. Additionally, these movies illustrate a few race-based misconceptions that continue to exist today, not just between black and white America, but across international borders, that include many different ethnic groups. While, (commasplice)Wakanda is a fictitious place, it represents what Africa could be one day, develop into. Lastly, the movie inspires people, especially within the black community, that anything is possible, if they believe in themselves. (You have to write a three-part thesis statement. This is something we talked about in our one-on-one—that focuses on why Black Panther was a defining moment for Black America. Without a thesis statement, this essay has no direction)
Thesis statement- Black Panther is a defining moment for Black America because it gives inspiration to Black youth, it gives representation of what Africa could be, and its contribution to the concept of Afrofuturism (Wallace reading)
I. Inspiration to youth
II. Secondly, …. An ideal of Africa or what Africa could be.
III. Thirdly, Afro-Futurism
For other cultures, who identify with white superheros super heroes, the movie serves as a positive representation of the multifaceted black humanity. In contrast, young black people lacked super heroes who they could identify with, Blacks learned the value of leadership and technological achievement within their own community, and they were provided with a visualization of a prosperous non-colonized modern-day African society. (Examples from the reading)
Most young people around the world have heard about super heroes, but don’t really pay attention to what race they are. For years, the only super heroes within mainstream media with positive representation were mainly white. When the Black Panther was introduced in February 2018, his character presented a diversified milestone for young African Americans who were of that same race. Additionally, the movie educated audiences alike on experiences and celebrating Black culture and African culture. This further demonstrated that a black character defied stereotypes, such as, instances of hostility and social exclusion towards people of the black community.
If Africa was not colonized by having their natural resources exploited, perhaps it could have developed into a powerful continent. Wakanda depicted this theory, that maybe this could have been true. For instance, Wakanda’s indestructible metal, Vibranium, was only found in their country which made them a powerful nation. This resource, while held in isolation, was being considered to aid foreign nations and to share technological knowledge. Unlike real-life African resources such as: oil, diamonds, and gold, which are exploited by colonized countries, Wakanda protected their resource which made them economically stable as a nation.
Ultimately, the movie has left a cultural footprint in black society. It reflects the importance of black representation in American culture, which is long overdue. Furthermore, it mirrors countless versions of successful black people – soldiers, scientists, leaders, etc. that blacks can identify with. If Wakanda was a real-life country in Africa, they could join forces with other African countries to become technologically advanced just as other nations. Last but not least, the movie provides a viewpoint that black lives matter and is worth sharing with the world.
