1. Dear friend,
Today I had the opportunity to visit The Courtauld Gallery in London. The purpose of my visit was to view Edouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergere, 1882. The painting is large, and I believe that is because Manet was trying to tell so many stories in one painting. He painted this from his own experiences in the bar. He made multiple sketches while there and finished his final work in his studio. This painting is of a lady standing behind a bar as if she is a bartender. There is a mirror behind her, and you can see the reflection of the other customers in the bar. Some are sitting down and in particular, one of the reflections shows a man at the bar who seems to be ordering a drink from the woman. Looking at the woman straight on she seems unhappy and staring into space. But, looking at her in the reflection of the mirror she seems to be leaning in and engaging with the man ordering a drink or talking to her. The painting is very detailed showing the labels on the bottles of wine to the legs of a trapeze artist in the top left corner of the painting.
Evidently many barmaids at this time were also prostitutes which could explain her sad look but, in the reflection, she is engaged in conversation with a man. It was also interesting to me in the reflection one woman sitting in a gallery is the only patron painted in white clothing while everyone else is in dark clothing, which I assume was done to make her stand out. She and the other men and women near her seem to be wearing nice clothing which might indicate that the bar is an upscale establishment. This is a typical impressionist painting because it depicts current everyday real life.
I feel that by showing the barmaid in both face-on and in reflection, is making the point that when they are being watched by the public, people feel that they have to act differently than how they feel. In the case of the patrons, I believe Manet is making the point that they want to be seen by the public and that maybe they feel they are better than some of the other patrons. In the end, he painted what he actually saw at the Bar but used the subjects to tell the story of the people working at and patronizing the Bar.
I am so happy that I finally was able to see the painting as the colors are pleasing and I could feel the stories of Manet’s subjects.

2. Hello you,
I am having the time of my life visiting Spain. Currently I am in the Prado Museum in Madrid. There is this painting that caught my eye called The Third of May, 1808, by Francisco de Goya. It is a interesting piece, but with a rather depressing feeling while viewing it. Within this painting there is a scene when the French invaded Spain and they are executing the Spanish. On the left side there is a line of armed French soldiers that are armed and killing the civilians of Spain. There are dead bodies laying on the ground with blood around them from being shot. In the middle of the painting there is a man holding up his hands to show that he is surrendering to the French. This caught my eye since the artist was able to use primarily dark colors within the whole piece, but shed some light on this man surrendering. It seems to me that the paining is drawn in a two dimensional way meanwhile the scale and portion seem to be rather similar all around, but I do notice that there is a hill in the background along with a building drawn smaller to show distance. This is on a 8’10’x 11’5″canvas imagine all the details I just gave you but on a much bigger scale. With this painting it really gave you an image on what that day must’ve been like for those on both sides the French and Spaniards. You have to come see it one day it is a great piece of history!

3. Dear beloved friend,
Today I had the opportunity to view one of the most beautiful and elegant paintings in this art gallery that opened downtown. I recently went here as a field trip for this college course I am taking, its about appreciating art and learning its terminology. But to get back to the painting it was presented in its own section of the art gallery about 37 1/4″ X 51 1/4″ in size. The way they had mastered the lighting to compliment the painting was truly astonishing. Now I know what you’re thinking when is this guy going to describe the actual painting? Don’t worry I got you.
The painting Is called A Bar at the Folies-Bergere, 1881-82, by Edouard Manet one of his final masterpieces created one prior to his death. The original painting is in the Courtauld Gallery, London. The painting depicts a barmaid at a sort of ballroom, there she is standing at the bar acknowledging a male guest, as well as numerous amounts of other guest enjoying the festivities which can be shown in the background off the reflection of the mirror. The barmaid appears as just another item in the enticing array on offer in the foreground: wine, champagne, peppermint liqueur and British Bass beer, with its iconic red triangle logo (The Courtauld). The colors mostly used through the entirety of the painting are dark, cool colors except for the barmaid’s complexion. The vibrant colors mostly depicted in the foreground this contains bright oranges in a glass bowl, various wines, and champagne’s as well as two softly colored flowers in a single glass vase. The barmaid is actually a portrait of Suzon who came to pose while this was being painted (The Courtauld).
This paining is depiction of what modern “Nightlife” was back then in 1881-82 which the scene has drastically changed over time. If someone were to do a painting of our modern nightlife the colors of choice would be very different than those that were used in Manet’s painting. The colors that would mostly be used would be a mixture dark, bright, and vibrant colors. I recommend seeing this for yourself it’s a sight to behold for sure.
