Add to this story so that the character Rachel grows up and realizes that although her mother was mentally insane lost in the streets of New York, she too was falling into the entrapment of being stuck in love with someone who doesnt exists anymore.
STORY –
Rachel, then nine years old, sat at the kitchen table while her mother frantically made dinner and got the kids ready for bed on a sweltering July night in New York City. Rachel stared in awe as her mother meticulously straightened the sheets and plumped the cushions on her bed. Before going to bed, Rachel pleaded her mother, “Mama, would you read me a story?” Her mother took Rachel’s hand and smiled as she sat down next to her. ” Yes, of course, sweetheart. What type of story would you prefer to hear?” Her mother always spoke in such a formal matter, unless speaking of Poland. The only place that reminded her of true childlike happiness and freedom. Rachel gave it some thought before finally replying. “Tell me about yourself when you were my age in Poland.”
Mentioning her native country brought a smile to her mother’s face. ” Oh, Poland. Rachel, it was a very long time ago. But it seems like just yesterday when I enjoyed it. There were lush green valleys and bright flower meadows wherever you looked. And the people were wonderful; helpful, kind, and giving. Yet there is one person who has left an indelible impression on me. His name was Jakob and he was the most breathtaking young man I’d ever seen. We met while we were both in our early adolescent years, and I knew he was the one for me immediately. Each spare minute was spent strolling across the fields and discussing our hopes for the future. Whereas I had set my sights on being a teacher, Jakob was dead set on becoming a doctor. It seemed like nothing could stop us when we were young and in love. But then the war came along, and everything changed. When the Germans invaded Poland, all of our hopes and aspirations were shattered at once. I couldn’t find Jakob and ran for my life. The only thing I took with me when I went was the knowledge that I’d never see Jakob again. I landed myself in New York, where I met your father and began a whole new chapter in my life. Nonetheless, Jakob was constantly on my mind, and I held out hope that we would be reunited someday. Unfortunately, such was not the case. Jakob had perished in the war, and your father moved on to other endeavors with women who were not long-term assets. I was responsible for caring for you and your siblings all on my own. It was challenging, but I persevered with Jakob’s love and encouragement in mind. And now, Rachel, my sweetheart, I want for you to recall this tale. Love is an overwhelming force that can triumph over any difficulty. However, there are times when the challenges are just too much to bear. You’ll need to have the courage to let go and move on when that time comes.”
The tears welled up in Rachel’s eyes as she glanced up at her mother. ” I’m terribly sorry, Mama. I had no idea.” Smiling, she wiped a tear off Rachel’s cheek. ” It’s all right, sweetheart. A lot of time has passed, and I’ve accepted the past. You should go to bed now and rest up for the day. Have a nice dream.”
Before turning off the light, Rachel’s mother kissed her on the forehead and walked out that door for the last time. Reminded of her unbearable craving for Jakob, her mother briskly fell lost in the night caught up in the fantasy that Jakob wasn’t dead but was lost.
Rachel’s mother exhibited certain signs of mental instability, as if the horrors of war and the death of Jakob had left an irreversible scar on her psyche. She had outbursts of rage and periods of sadness, and Rachel frequently found herself attempting to lift her spirits. Rachel loved her mother very much and did all she could to help her out. She listened to her mother talk about her time in Poland and her relationship with Jakob, and she attempted to fathom the anguish her mother felt. For as long as Rachel could remember, she had dreamed for the same sort of love that her mother had had for Jakob.
