Can you imagine a world where your fundamental right as a citizen is stripped completely from beneath you? The argument regarding whether one should be willing to give up some personal liberty in exchange for increased safety is perennially discussed. It is important to note that this debate is still very much relevant in today’s world. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how two perspectives, which on the surface appear to be quite like one another, can become radically distinct after being dissected and to explore the implications of trading one’s freedom for one’s safety in the context of today’s advanced technological society.
When weighed against one another, freedom and security continue to be two of the most critical components of any society; however, when forced to choose between the two, one is typically held to a higher standard. The public is willing to compromise in its embrace of the Bill of Rights when it sees the need to adjust to heightened risk, as Stanley (2018) observed in his article “A Pro-Liberty Case for Gun Restrictions.” This paper will investigate the implications of compromising one’s freedom to ensure one’s safety in the modern world. The United States is constantly under attack from various threats, which require striking a delicate balance between a person’s freedom and security.
As Benjamin Franklin famously proclaimed, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” The tension between freedom and security is ever-increasing in today’s technologically driven world, putting strain on our professional and personal lives. This begs the question: “Would you be willing to sacrifice your freedom for security?” Social media creates a unique dilemma and stress in our daily lives, as we can use platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and email to communicate, but these same outlets pose a risk of fear and propaganda. Kristoff (2002) noted in his article “Security and Freedom” that “At times of national stress, political leaders take shortcuts with the law, to general applause.” This quote emphasizes the tendency of political leaders to evade their responsibilities in the name of security, even if it means sacrificing liberty.
My core values are honesty, trust, and respect. These qualities I look for in people, especially regarding our government. They are not responsible for choosing what is best for me because I have my thoughts and observations. Someone else may find something completely different that works for them, just as I may find something that works for me. These, in my opinion, are the three most vital attributes for a leader in any partnership. Even when it is not required, honesty is a necessary trait for any leader; it fosters trust and sets a worthy example, both of which are required for success in any undertaking. Finally, respect must be shown to one’s peers and those in positions of power, such as the government.
Unsurprisingly, gun violence has sowed a general lack of trust in many communities. When the government breaches the rights of its citizens, it invariably claims that it is doing so to protect them. We rely on our governing bodies to lead this country in the right direction and enforce the law, and we show them respect for that. However, a lack of trust in the government will not deter gun violence. People will continue to protect themselves, defy authorities and use violence to protest. As it appears in Haynes’s (2015) article, “Liberty vs. Security An old debate renewed in the age of Terror,” Sensenbrenner, who was the original architect of the Patriot Act week after 9/11, felt betrayed by an overweening government. This information shows that the authority doesn’t follow the laws they set in place and isn’t straightforward about what goes on behind closed doors.
In summary, freedom and safety are preserved when people’s rights are valued and upheld. This can only happen if the people trust their government and leaders to keep their interests in mind. The government must ensure that the laws and regulations it introduces do not disrupt its citizen’s rights. Furthermore, the communities’ job is to respect the law and recognize that they are giving up some independence in exchange for protection. This debate will continue to cause conflict for many years to come. Freedom and security advocates have argued about how to strike a balance between the two for centuries. If a nation wants to maintain its citizens’ freedom and security, its laws and regulations must not work against its interests. People must believe in their government and understand that they’ll have to give up some freedom in exchange for safety.
