Evidence-Based Project, Part 5: Recommending an Evidence-Based Practice Change
The collection of evidence is an activity that occurs with an endgame in mind. For example, law enforcement professionals collect evidence to support a decision to charge those accused of criminal activity. Similarly, evidence-based healthcare practitioners collect evidence to support decisions in pursuit of specific healthcare outcomes.
In this Assignment, you will identify an issue or opportunity for change within your healthcare organization and propose an idea for a change in practice supported by an EBP approach.
To Prepare:
Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you critically appraised in Module 4.
Reflect on your current healthcare organization and think about potential opportunities for evidence-based change.
The Assignment: (Evidence-Based Project)
Part 5: Recommending an Evidence-Based Practice Change
Create an 8- to 9-slide PowerPoint presentation in which you do the following:
Briefly describe your healthcare organization, including its culture and readiness for change. (You may opt to keep various elements of this anonymous, such as your company name.)
Describe the current problem or opportunity for change. Include in this description the circumstances surrounding the need for change, the scope of the issue, the stakeholders involved, and the risks associated with change implementation in general.
Propose an evidence-based idea for a change in practice using an EBP approach to decision making. Note that you may find further research needs to be conducted if sufficient evidence is not discovered.
Describe your plan for knowledge transfer of this change, including knowledge creation, dissemination, and organizational adoption and implementation.
Describe the measurable outcomes you hope to achieve with the implementation of this evidence-based change.
Be sure to provide APA citations of the supporting evidence-based peer reviewed articles you selected to support your thinking.
Add a lessons learned section that includes the following:
A summary of the critical appraisal of the peer-reviewed articles you previously submitted
An explanation about what you learned from completing the evaluation table (1 slide)
An explanation about what you learned from completing the levels of evidence table (1 slide)
An explanation about what you learned from completing the outcomes synthesis table (1 slide)

Recommending an Evidence-Based Practice Change
Introduction
In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:
Through EBP, nurses seek to improve patient care through the use of current information about the most effective nursing interventions.
Through EBP, nurses seek to improve patient care through the use of current information about the most effective nursing interventions. The goal of evidence-based practice is to identify and use current best practices that have been proven effective in improving patient outcomes.
EBPs are based on current evidence, which means they focus on evidence of effectiveness, not just scientific evidence. This type of research can be difficult for many nurses because it involves complex statistical analyses and other methods that require significant training in statistics or advanced mathematics skills (4).
In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:
In this assignment, you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:

Analyze strategies to promote and support evidence-based practice
-
Describe strategies to engage staff members in the change process
Explain how nurse leaders influence and communicate change in the healthcare setting
In this section, we’ll cover some of the ways that nurse leaders influence and communicate change in the healthcare setting.
-
Nurse leaders are facilitators of nurse-patient relationships. They lead teams of nurses who work together to provide care for patients with chronic diseases or illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. Nurse leaders can help improve patient satisfaction by providing information about how to manage their condition effectively, leading group discussions around patient goals (like living healthier lives), helping them determine what kind of treatment would be most beneficial for them at this time in their lives, etc…
Analyze strategies to promote and support evidence-based practice
You’ll want to analyze the evidence for the effectiveness of your proposed change. This can include data that demonstrates that:
-
The proposed change will have a positive impact on health outcomes and costs.
-
The proposed change is cost-effective, or at least as cost-effective as other options in the same category (e.g., alternative medical treatments).
Describe strategies to engage staff members in the change process
Once you’ve identified the problem, you may need to engage staff members in the change process. This can be difficult because staff members may have different perspectives on what needs to change and how it needs to change. For example, some may feel that a new practice is better than an old one, while others may feel that their current practice is best for them personally or professionally. Others might be worried about job security if they don’t agree with your recommendations or if they feel like they’re being asked too much by taking part in this process (e.g., “I work here”). In addition, there are many different ideas about how best practices could be implemented—some could involve changing existing practices completely while others might require only small tweaks here and there; some people think these changes should happen immediately while others think they should wait until after high-level approval has been granted first before proceeding with any changes at all (and then only after consulting with upper management beforehand).
Finally, some employees may feel as though their suggestions aren’t being listened too closely enough during meetings where decisions are made regarding evidence-based practices–and therefore don’t want any part of something else happening until those concerns get addressed first!
Takeaway:
-
EBP is a key component of nursing practice.
-
EBP is an evolving concept that requires the integration of research, clinical expertise and patient needs.
-
There are four core elements: evidence-based practice (EBP), research evaluation and application (REA), program development and improvement (PDI), and quality improvement processes
Conclusion
We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about all of the different aspects of this course. In addition to learning about EBP, you will also gain hands-on experience in implementing evidence-based practices in your facility. The best part?
