According to the textbook the substances women should avoid during pregnancy are alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, recreational drugs, and some prescription medications. Alcohol If drank during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol syndrome which will cause lasting health effects to the baby. This is because fetal alcohol syndrome will affect the development of the fetuses’ organs which will cause a lot of health effects and could lead to death. I have met people that were born with fetal alcohol syndrome and it has affected their lives dramatically.

Caffeine if drank in excess of 200mg per day can cause additional health problems as well. These problems include miscarriage and premature birth. Six of the food’s women should avoid during pregnancy due to food borne pathogens are as follows uncooked meat, raw or smoked seafood, raw dough, raw sprouts, unpasteurized juice, and unpasteurized dairy products. From listening to the news, I knew that women should avoid most wild seafood due to the high levels of mercury and microplastics which can affect the development of the child. I personally didn’t know that women should avoid raw dough I guess I will have to avoid cookie dough ice cream for a little while. I also didn’t know about the raw sprouts but I eat most of my vegetables cooked anyway so I will just cook all my vegetables when the time comes.
