‘Socialization’ is an extremely important milestone in the life of a tween (ages 6-12)
Throughout Chapter 12, ‘Socialization’ is an extremely important milestone in the life of a tween (ages 6-12). “Fitting in with peers” becomes more evident during these years (ages 6-12). Peers play a major role in the development of socialization. Peer socialization can happen at school, in-person or online; or, after school, in-person or online. Presently, many children are choosing technology (e.g., game consoles) or social media (e.g., Instagram) to engage in socialization with friends or to make new friends. However, there are several negative outcomes that can pose a danger to children’s health and development. Is there anything that parents/caregivers can do?
Activity
For this activity, you will search for strategies that parents/caregivers can reinforce to supervise or limit social media interactions. In addition, search for alternative families activities that can redirect or replace socialization online. Therefore, with minimal or no supervision, the use of technology or media can lead to negative outcomes or engagements:
cyberbully
child porn
child trafficking
meeting strangers
distortion of body image
disconnection between reality and fantasy
isolation
mood swings
sleep problems
overweight/obesity
mimicking negative behaviors
distraction from school or family matters
irresponsibility/acquiring bad habits (not completing chores/daily tasks)
