1) We’ve covered a number of topics in the second part of the course including blockchain as a new wave of disruption, new money, blockchain in the global south, and the data economy. 80 what is blockchain? Using theories and concepts from the second half of the course, identify and describe what you consider to be two of the most important issues or topics related to the ways blockchain platforms, applications, and cryptocurrencies are or are beginning to impact our personal lives, social relations, and business practices. 2) One of the wicked problems that emerged during the development and adoption of the Internet is captured in the concept privacy. Some refer to collection of data mining and big data tools, techniques, and practices as a surveillance society. Others conceptualize these practices that are reproducing racism, sexism, and other forms of structural discrimination as algorithmic oppression. Privacy discourse has also become a symbol of resistance against the data mining activities of governments and major corporations. At the same time, we seem to be living and acting in a privacy paradox. Describe how authors from the course research and discuss the data economy and privacy. What is this "privacy paradox"? How does surveillance capitalism in social platforms blend personal and public spaces? How does Blockchain either challenge or maintain a surveillance society? 3) Some scholars and entrepreneurs suggest information and communication technologies (lCTs) are playing a significant role in the development of economic and social relations of countries in the
Global South. However, an emphasis on concepts that discuss lCTs within a Western lens has resulted in a noticeable lack of theorization that addresses the relationship between disruptive technology and society in a global context. Using the concepts, readings, and lecture materials from week 8, discuss the impact blockchain is having on the social and economic development of countries in the Global South. What affordances do ICTs offer to support global economic and social development? What features of lCTs can constrain global development, especially along the lines of gender? 4) The Swartz reading is an example of cutting-edge attempts in our field to rethink the sociality of money and how money is communication. She argues, payment is becoming social media while new money, like Bitcoin, is being created by communities. At the same time, social media memes have become cryptocurrencies, like Dogecoin. What are these new waves of disruption? What do they mean for us as individuals and as a society? Make a clear argument that is grounded in the course readings, citing theories, concepts, and authors, and include well illustrated by relevant examples.
