Morality without God? Divine Command Theory
Need Response #1
I hope I’m not the only one who had difficulty with grasping the content of the video and had to re-watch a few times before I could begin to make an argument about the subject. Before this lesson I’ve had this argument with others before; that you don’t need to label yourself i.e. to a certain religion in order to be a good person. I did not know at the time that I was arguing against the Divine Command Theory and that without God there would be no morality, hence no right and wrong. I grew up Catholic and only went to church when made to which wasn’t often. Now as an adult I would not call myself religious by any means we go to church regularly on Sundays because we want our children to be exposed to morality. It also helps that the church is a little more modern that what I grew up attending with all the kneeling and hymns. The Pastors are relatable in that they preach like everyday people and have everyday problems. My dilemma is that I find that I contradict myself in that, believing in God or being religious is not a requirement for being a “good” person. However, I take my children to church in order to be exposed to morality in the hopes that they’ll do good things and grow up to be good people.-Ronald Vasquez

Natural law is a theory that human beings possess enough values and morals that can explain their behavior or why they do certain things. Natural law is a constant theory, one that does not change because it revolves around human nature, not cultures. Natural law is not taught, yet humans learn by consistently making decisions for good rather than bad; for example, a person that always sees someone drop money, returns the money to the owner instead of keeping it.-Shyanne Hill

Morality without God? Divine Command Theory
Good evening class and professor. This week, I chose topic A. I consider myself to be a believer of a higher power, God. However, I agree with the theory of Divine Command. In the first video by Stephen Darwall, he uses the example of Huck Finn, who recognized his inner morality as a child. He knew exactly what was wrong, even though it technically went against the law. Now here is where my stance gets very rocky in regard to Darwall’s first topic question, is there morality without God? Some part of me believes that could be true. In my opinion, each religion is just a spin off from the one true God. I believe most religions were created out of greed and that each religion’s book of God was written and interpreted with a heavily biased mind and possibly a power-driving motive. Almost as if each religion is basically just a different “business”. These are obviously very controversial claims, I understand that. The belief that we could have natural morals built within us is the very reason why I believe it is God. In the paper “God, Morality, and Religion”, the writer quotes, “Morality is whatever God commands.” In this theory you would have to, without a doubt in your mind, believe that the bible is the exact word of God. In that case, we know that God commands very harsh things in the bible. Then, you would have to ignore your inner moral code in order to follow God’s commandments. All of them, not just a select few of the ones you agree with. Please let me know your thoughts on what I have written today. I apologize if I have offended anyone at all, these are just my opinions.-Jessica Myers
