Locate and analyze five magz. ads in the following ways.
I. Rhetorical Analysis.
Write an analysis for each of three ads. (Start each analysis on a separate page
and identify the magazine and subject of the ad at the top.) You can discuss visual as well as verbal elements. That is, in addition to text, you may consider photographs, graphics, or drawings. Think in terms of audience, style, tone, voice, and slanting. Consider such figurative language (or representation) as simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, allusion, oxymoron, hyperbole, litotes, and irony. You may also want to analyze the ad’s use of such rhetorical devices as parallelism, inversion, anadiplosis, epanalepsis, anaphora, epistrophe, chiasmus, ellipsis, and so on. (Handy list w/ corresponding page numbers for review can be found at MBK pp. 170-71.)
II. Comparison.
Write a brief paragraph comparing your three ads from section I. Work for
smooth interweaving of discussion with your three-way comparison.
III. Logical Fallacy Review.
Find two ads that display logical fallacies. Fully explain the fallacy or fallacies
in each ad. Choose from: Bandwagon, Post hoc, Ad hominem, Dicto Simpliciter, Hasty Generalization, False Analogy, False Dilemma, Non sequitur, Hypothesis Contrary to Fact, Begging the Question, Circular Argument, Red Herring, or any others you remember from the funny story.
* Staple the whole “wad” of analyses together with a class cover sheet (page w/ plain class heading) at the front. Include the ads themselves–each ad should have its own separate page(s) of analysis. Put logical fallacy examples at the back. You should have:
