“I believe that the overall goal of the video and campaign are to break the barrier of what people assume “typical” love looks like, and force people to rethink how they perceive love. Romantic relationships don’t have to be a man and a woman or two people of the same race, but it doesn’t make it any less of a relationship. Families may have two parents of the same sex, or have a member with a disability, which doesn’t make it any less of a family. It is taking traditional love in a broad sense and advertising all types of love as traditional.
I do think the campaign fights against stereotypes in the media. We often don’t see these kinds of representation (and although we are seeing them a lot more frequently now, they used to be very rare). I think we are all so used to seeing love portrayed in the media in ways that are comfortable for the media, such as heterosexual couples, or all white families, so when audiences see something like this campaign, it is really going to stick with them.
In the take action section of the campaign website, I selected to look more into what actions to take to support Native communities. I was anticipating what I saw about celebrating Indigenous People’s day, as well as including the Native perspective in Thanksgiving. What I was not expecting was all of the information about the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). There was information about the museum itself, which I didn’t even know existed, as well as information about their art galleries, and how to access more information to learn about Native people. There was also a suggestion to “be a myth buster”, which is so simple, but probably the most important suggestion. It is so easy to associate stereotypes, especially for a group of people that doesn’t get a lot of representation, so just learning about the many cultures, and recognizing that Native people are individuals, is the foundation for breaking down those stereotypes” bb.
