In this research project, you will choose an Asian identity to study. Some topics could be: gender, sexuality, class, ability. The focus will be on Asians, who have faced a lot of racial violence and xenophobia throughout history and during the COVID-19 pandemic. not many people realize how much Asian Americans have suffered You want to examine the way some institutions treat Asian people. For example, you could look at schools, the workplace, hospitals/the healthcare system, immigration laws, to name a few.

You will seek to answer the question. How is injustice to this group institutionalized? In other words, how do the policies and practices of our social institutions perpetuate the oppression of the group you are studying?

Research Requirements

This is a research project, meaning that most of the material you provide should be found in the external sources of your own research. You will need to cite at least eight sources in your research paper. Four of these sources must be academic sources. You are welcome to use the reading material we have done together so far.

Your paper must contain

An introduction that ends with an arguable thesis designed to answer the paper’s question

A minimum of 8 p0ges

A well-organized, focused body paragraph

Appropriate integration of research and outside sources into your own writing

Creative conclusion that goes beyond restating the main points of your essay

M/A formatting, including properly formatted works cited pages

PAPER-WRITING CHECKLIST Before submitting your paper, complete the following checklist. INTRODUCTION _ My introductory paragraph tells the reader the subject of my research, and defines key terms I will use in my thesis. _My introduction contains a clearly-stated thesis which explains how and why something happened. _ My thesis is: Specific _ Arguable PARAGRAPHS _I have thought about how my paragraphs are arranged, and they are structured in a way that best supports my argument. I have checked to make sure that I completely tackle one part of my argument before moving on to the next, and I have checked to make sure that I do not unnecessarily revisit arguments I began earlier in the paper. _ Each paragraph is focused around a main idea ("mini-thesis"), which is stated in the paragraph’s first sentence ("topic sentence"). _ Each paragraph employs evidence supporting that idea. That evidence is analyzed; that is, I have used my own words to tell the reader why and how my evidence supports the topic sentence. _ Each paragraph has a workable transition from its predecessor. QUOTING AND CITATION All material I have quoted appears between quote marks. I have minimized or eliminated block quotes. When I have used them, I have indented them on the left, single-spaced them, and not placed quotations at the start and end. _ Each time I bring in evidence that is not clearly common knowledge, I have cited the source of that information _ Each time I quote I have checked to make sure the quotation is properly integrated into the sentence. _ For each of my quotes, it is clear who the speaker of the quote is, and the circumstances in which the speaker authored the quote (relevant time, place, and context). I have included a bibliography of my sources, which conforms to the style of my style manual. STYLE Each page is numbered consecutively. I have used a common typeface, like Times New Roman. _ I have double-spaced the paper, and have left one-inch margins at top, bottom, and sides (despite Microsoft’s attempt to force me into 1.25 margins) _ The title of my paper clearly relates to its contents, or to the question I have been asked to answer.

EDITING I have proofread the paper for spelling and grammar errors. I have re-written the paper at least once, identifying and eliminating instances of: wordiness awkward sentence structure colloquial phrases passive voice inconsistent tenses subject/verb disagreement dangling clauses improper pronoun references comma splices, run-on sentences, and sentence fragments using commas as semi-colons and vice-versa I have read the paper ALOUD to myself or to someone else, listening for sentences that do not work. I have gone back through my paper and varied my sentence-structure, making my sentences and paragraphs not only good analysis, but elegant in style
