I have seen 30 of the 100 films on the BFI’s greatest films of all time list for 2022: Vertigo, Citizen Kane, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Singin’ in the Rain, The Godfather, Cleo from 5 to 7, Persona, Taxi Driver, Psycho, Blade Runner, Sherlock Jr, GoodFellas, Casablanca, My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Modern Times, The Shining, A Man Escaped, and Get Out. My favorites out of these are Vertigo, Taxi Driver, Spirited Away and Modern Times. Jeanne Dielman was an experiment by Chantal Akerman and it was critically successful and deserves to be on this list, I just don’t believe it belongs at the #1 spot. There are too many landmark films on this list and there are as many opinions as there are people looking over the list. Some films I would have liked to have seen on the list are The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Dead Poets Society (1989), and Hidden Figures (2016). Seeing as I haven’t seen most of the films on the list I can’t speak as to which, if any, should have been excluded. The films listed are landmark productions from various countries and deserve a place in the history of film. My five favorite films are: The Truman Show, Midnight in Paris, Dead Poets Society, Mary Poppins, Wall-E, The Truman Show is a feature on free will vs determinism, Midnight in Paris is full of romance and escapism, Dead Poets Society is an inspirational film about living your life, Mary Poppins is a children’s classic, and Wall-E is a story of hope and rebirth.
