A Tribute Dr. Michael DeBakey was a world-renowned cardiac surgeon, who was a pioneer in the field of medicine. Dr. Michael DeBakey was born in Louisiana in 1908. He was the eldest of five children born to a family of modest means. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a homemaker. DeBakey was a bright child and did well in school. He went on to attend Tulane University, where he earned his medical degree.
After finishing medical school, DeBakey completed a residency in surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He then returned to Tulane to teach surgery. It was during this time that DeBakey developed an interest in cardiac surgery. In 1937, he performed one of the first successful surgeries to repair a damaged heart valve.
DeBakey’s surgical innovations changed the field of cardiac surgery. He developed new techniques for treating heart disease and invented several devices that are still used today, such as the artificial heart and the heart-lung machine. DeBakey also helped establish the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical complex.n 1999, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. In 2006, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian by the U.S. Congress.
