In your responses to your peers, provide recommendations for how the communication from leadership might be improved. How might you use some of the identified strengths, or the recommended improvements, in your final project, to communicate your marketing plan to the internal and external stakeholders?
Preston Discussion:
A perfect example of a recent change within the organization was our recent acquisition by a private equity firm. Prior to this acquisition, the practice was doctor owned and managed. All funding was at the expense of business loans taken out by the doctors. While our clinic ran well and profited, it lacked the growth needed to keep up with competition. With only a few hundred employees and eleven satellite offices, our company was on the edge of a decision, either become unmanageable and scale back to keep the clinic small or expand with the aid of private funding. The decision be bought by a private equity firm fundamentally changed the clinic.
During the process of the merger, there was infrequent communication with the lower level staff. In fact, most of the information were just rumors spread by word-of-mouth until the deals were all finalized. Once finalized, an email communication was sent out in the following days by the CEO to address the growing rumors and explain the reasoning behind their decision. Using the channel of an email address allowed the CEO to write a clear and concise message to the whole company. Since the receivers included everyone, the message was not very detailed and it left many with unanswered questions. The best communications came in the following months from middle management through a series of emails. These emails detailed changes, policy updates, and answered questions submitted by lower level staff. Where communication fell short was in the months prior to the merger. Many doctors hired around that time joined the clinic with hopes of becoming partners with joint ownership. What was never explained was the talks of growth and potential acquisition by a PE firm. While this was great for current partners who sold their shares for a lump sum, it left those other doctors feeling betrayed. In the months surrounding the merger, we lost 6 doctors due to lack of communication.

Reflecting on a time in my professional career when a change was suggested just happened recently. Since Co-Vid we have been staffing with a lot of agency nurses and nursing assistants. This has brought about a lot of discourse within our group of associates. Many have gone to the administrator and threatened to quit. This has brought about the administrator hosting meetings first with the nursing managers and then with the direct staff on the floor to get everyone’s opinion about whether to work at getting agency out of the building or continue with them. There was a vote put forth by associates and the administrator is going with what they wish.
The communication strategies used here was the communication model. This began with the sender as the associates who complained, then the encoding of the message by the administrator and then the communication sent out through the channel of the other associates and finally the decoding of the message through the receiver which is back to the administrator. Each of these strategies were communicated via promotional strategies through advertising, personal selling, publicity and then promotion. All this through relationship marketing by developing a strategy that shifts the organizations thinking from an individual transaction to a relationship that focuses on long term loyalty (Cellucci, etc 2014).
