The Sent One and the Sent Ones

·       In this assignment you will analyze certain aspects of the Christology and soteriology/discipleship concepts in the Gospel of John. You will be doing much of the primary source investigation yourself in order to develop this assignment. Do not hesitate to find and use secondary sources that are appropriate to the goal of the assignment. In addition to the course readings (textbook and Bible), use and cite two to three other sources.

Preparation

·       Find references in John related to the idea of “sending.” Jesus speaks of it often, referring to God, himself, and his disciples. The two words most significant in John’s gospel for “sending” are the following:

·       Apostello

·       Pempo

·       Compile two lists in the tables provided of those verses/passages where this concept is discussed in the Gospel of John. Use websites such as Blue Letter Bible or Bible Hub to assist you in your search for passages to be added to the lists. Cite peer-reviewed academic sources in the summaries.

Part 1: The Sent One

In Part 1 (The Sent One) identify those verses about sending that refer to Jesus and his nature and mission.

List of texts: Jesus is sent by his Father (add more lines as necessary).

Summary of Jesus as the “Sent One.” Answer each question in 125-150 words.

1.     Who is doing the sending? What is the significance of the use of the action of sending in this concept of Jesus?

2.     The sending is done from where to where? Where is Jesus sent from and sent to?

3.     What is the mission Jesus is sent on? Elaborate on what John (and Jesus, as recorded by John) says about this mission.

4.     Where does Jesus end up after he is done with the mission (the eschatology of John)?

Part 2: The Sent Ones

In Part 2 (The Sent Ones) identify those verses that refer to the disciples, especially in their role and mission as disciples  

List of texts: The disciples are sent by Jesus/God (add more lines as necessary).

Summary of the disciples as the “sent ones.” Answer each question in 125-150 words.

1.     Who is doing the sending? What is the significance of the use of the action of sending in this concept of the disciples?

2.     The sending is done from where to where? Where are the disciples sent from and sent to?

3.     What is the mission the disciples are sent on? Elaborate on what John (and Jesus, as recorded by John) says about this mission.

4.     Where do the disciples end up after they are done with the mission (the eschatology of John)?

Part 3: Concluding Questions

Answer each question in 125-150 words.

1.     What does this study say about who Jesus is and what the essence of his mission was?

2.     What does this study say about who a disciple is and what it means to be the disciple of Jesus?

3.     How do the themes of the Sent One and Sent Ones fit within the broader message and purpose of John’s gospel for his readers?
