Attached above you will find a description of the final project for this course, which includes both a written component and a short video presentation. You can submit the 2-page write-up using the link here (click on the title “Final Project”), and the video will be submitted through the separate link below. Details of what to include are in the Project Description, along with a breakdown of the grading scheme. Please note that the video is a required component of both the project and this course; as it states in the syllabus, failure to submit the video by the deadline of Sunday, July 12 at 11:59p will result in a final grade for MTH165 no higher than a D.
The goal of this project is to give you an opportunity to see firsthand how the statistics that you have learned about in this course can show up in the real world, outside of our “classroom.” You will read one of the 3 attached journal articles detailing a (somewhat) recent statistical study, write a 2 page analysis following the guidelines in the description, and then create a short 3-5 min video presentation in which you will give an overview of the study and some highlights from your analysis.
The 3 options for the journal articles are the following. They all discuss studies involving college students, and have been published in peer-reviewed journals in the last 10 years:
Caffeine Consumption Patterns and Beliefs of College Freshmen (Gary E. McIlvain , Melody P. Noland & Robert Bickel (2011) )
An Examination of Stress in College Students Over the Course of a Semester (Timothy Baghurst and Betty C. Kelley (2014))
Consumption of energy drinks among Québec college students (Marianne Picard-Masson, Julie Loslier, Pierre Paquin and Karine Bertrand (2016))
I have included a sample write-up of an article similar to the ones above, which you can use as a guideline for your own analysis.
part 2
Final Project (Video Presentation)
You will submit your video presentation component of the final project through this link (click on the title “Final Project (Video Presentation)”) . You will be asked whether you would like to record a video or upload one that you have already created using your phone or camera; either option is fine, although you may have trouble uploading a large video file. In order to record a video through this link, you need to open it on a device with a built-in camera and microphone. Please do not worry about making a perfectly polished video; you are able to re-record as many times as you’d like through GoReact, but that is not strictly necessary as long as you have mentioned all of the topics.
Keep in mind that this 3-5 minute video presentation is a required component of the project and the course, and failure to submit it by the deadline of Sunday, July 12 at 11:59p will result in a final grade for MTH165 no higher than a D. Your video provides you an opportunity to discuss the journal article that you analyzed and reflect on your statistical journey. Highlights to include in your video:
An overview of the study.
The inferential technique(s) used.
Conclusion(s) from the study
Personal reflections on the article, or about your study of statistics so far. Consider how you will use knowledge from this class in your future, whether for your career or simply as a more informed citizen reading articles online.
Please do not save this for the last minute (= Sunday evening); you will need a strong Internet connection to either upload or record a video, and it may take a few minutes to process after the upload is complete. There is also room for technical difficulties, which may take time to resolve.
