A monkey that controls a robot with its thoughts. No, really.
Discussions are an opportunity for you to practice clearly and effectively communicating your ideas, interact with and respectfully challenge your peers, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources as appropriate.
As described in your text, there has recently been a flurry of technological advances involving brain-computer interfaces (i.e., direct communication between a computer and the brain – usually via an array of electrodes placed in the brain), such as those discussed in the Chapter 8 case study of “Belle: The Monkey That Controlled a Robot With Her Mind”.
For this assignment, you’ll watch a TED Talk that explores the use of robots to gain motor function, and think about how this applies to our topics this week.
Successful completion of this activity meets Module Outcome 4.

Now, thoughtfully answer the following questions, thinking about the current views regarding primary motor cortex function and the evidence upon which it’s based.
What were your thoughts about the TED Talk? What did you learn that surprised or interested you the most?
What sorts of brain-computer interfaces do you envision for the future? What types of ethical problems might arise due to this and how can they be solved? As part of your answer, explain the role of different sensorimotor structures and functions.

You can grow new brain cells
Discussions are an opportunity for you to practice clearly and effectively communicating your ideas, interact with and respectfully challenge your peers, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources.
It’s time to get introduced to the concepts of the nervous system and neuroplasticity. Neurogenesis occurs during development and can also occur in response to environmental stimuli. Unfortunately, neurogenesis in the central nervous system of humans is limited in its ability to recover after damage. Recent research indicates that more extensive neurogenesis may be possible in the central nervous system.
Watch the TEDTalk to introduce yourself to important concepts within this module, and then post your reaction. Remember this is due before your discussions, on Wednesday of each week. The purpose of this is to help scaffold your learning so that you are introduced to module topics in the first assignment and then complete the learning quiz to help you become more familiar with the language and concepts. You’ll then be fully prepared to participate in a meaningful way within the discussion for the week, and be able to show off the things you’ve learned in your assignment due every Sunday.
Successfully completing this activity demonstrates achievement of Module Outcomes 3 and 4.

Now, answer the following:
Identify something you learned about the brain and neurons that you can use in your daily life to understand or work with others.
Given that brain damage seems to induce adult neurogenesis, what adaptive role, if any, might these new cells be playing? In your answer, describe the concept of “cognitive reserve” and the potential role of adult neurogenesis in recovery following CNS damage.
Based on your writing above, what would you say to someone who tells you that physical activity protects one from the development of Alzheimer’s Disease. What would be your response to that person? Use examples from your life or current events and/or scholarly evidence to support your argument.

In your reaction, answer the following:
What are your thoughts on what Johann said in this TED Talk? Do you agree? Disagree? Explain your reasons.
While your textbook focuses on addictions to substances, consider all addictive behaviors. What do you think the withdrawal reaction might be when one suddenly stops taking an antidepressant medication or engaging in an addictive behavior after many years. Explain your decision and include your explanation of what it means to be physically dependent on a drug (as part of this, you should describe the withdrawal process). To illustrate your writing, provide an example from your experiences.
In his presentation, Johann mentions policies surrounding drugs. If you could change those policies related to how we treat drug-addicted individuals, what would be the first thing you would change? In your answer, be sure to describe methods for measuring the rewarding effects of drugs and why the information you’re sharing is important for your policy recommendations.

A powerful stroke of insight
Learning, memory, lateralization, amnesia, smart drugs… These are all terms used throughout this module. This TED Talk focuses on cerebral lateralization and what it means for our every day life. This TED Talk is from 2008, but just because it’s not “new” doesn’t mean it’s not powerful and informative.
It wasn’t long ago that scientists believed that the brain functioned as a whole to complete every mental and psychical task. Now science understands brain lateralization in terms of the two halves of the human brain are not exactly alike. It is perplexing to realize that as one side of the brain may be working on understanding language the other side might be working on a math problem. This also means that each hemisphere has functional specializations and that some function with neural mechanisms that are localized primarily in one half of the brain. Let’s examine this further. By the end of this activity, you will be able to comment on an article on lateralization. In addition, you will address ways lateralization impact our language development.

Module 1 Assignment
Critical Thinking – Applying the Nature-Nurture Controversy
By this point in your college education, you are probably quite familiar with the nature-nurture controversy. In this critical thinking activity, you will create a short video explaining your perspectives about the nature-nurture controversy.
The major purpose of these final assignments in each module is to integrate the information you have learned throughout the current module and the course thus far, and to practice effective and professional communication of your ideas in various formats.
The reason you are making a video is because, as you already know, communication through only written information is not the only skill needed in today’s world. Being capable of communicating your ideas orally using professional body language and presentation skills is critical for job and career success. Creating videos will help you improve your technical and communication skills, which will be used in any career you pursue.
Successful completion of this activity meets Module Outcome 3.

Your task is to answer the two following questions in a short video:
Imagine you are a biopsychology instructor. One of your students asks you whether depression is physiological or psychological. What would you say?
Next, a student asks whether intelligence is inherited or learned… Now, you know that nature-or-nurture thinking about intelligence is sometimes used as an excuse for racial discrimination. How can the interactionist view, which has been championed in Chapter 2, be used as a basis for arguing against discriminatory practices in the workplace?
Briefly write out a script for yourself before you create the video. Scripts help you sound more focused and polished while keeping the information clear and concise. Follow the tips located here to maximize the impact of your script and video.
Canvas allows you to create video right within our LMS. Follow the directions givien in the “Technical Guidance” document, found at the beginning of our course.
Your video should be a maximum of 2 minutes long (60 seconds to answer each question posed above). Do your best to maintain your character of a professor answering questions in a classroom!

Critical Thinking – Ethical Problems and Solutions
For this activity, you will be using your biopsychological knowledge to create a two minute video that clearly and concisely communicates the identification of an ethical problem and your proposed solution.
Successful completion of this activity meets Module Outcome 5.
Choose one of the following options and create a 90 – 120 second oral argument, presented in a video (as your professional presence will also be evaluated):
Option 1: A politician has proposed cutting off funding to any labs that use stem-cell tissue. Using what you know about the development of the nervous system and how neuroscientists study neurodevelopment, what would you say at a public hearing about this topic?

Create an oral argument, complete with properly cited and reference scholarly sources as necessary, to support your writing. The oral argument must be presented in either a video (remember, professional presence!) or a voiceover in a multimedia presentation.
Sexual attraction, gender identity, and body type are independent of each other. Knowing this, imagine someone telling you that all male-to-female transsexual persons prefer males as their sexual partners. What would your response be? Support your response with an example. Be sure to identify and address at least one ethical problem faced by individuals within transgender communities and propose a reasonable solution.
Remember you must present some scholarly evidence and an example to support your argument.
