FINAL PAPER DUE: The complete assignment is due Wednesday of Unit 8 at 11:59 PM.
· The research paper must be based on research.
· Your completed paper must demonstrate research on at least five (5) scholarly/medical/research based resources. Websites about your disability are not acceptable unless you find and use specific articles found on the site.
· You must reference and cite your work according to APA. Follow all APA guidelines for formatting and citations.
· You may use no more than 4 direct quotations (a total of 10 sentences) in your paper. However, all information that you learned from a source must be cited in the text according to APA.
· Your paper must consist of 9-10 pages including: title page, abstract, sections A, B, and C, and reference page.
· Unit 6: OPTIONAL – Submit drafts of sections A, B, and C for Instructor’s review and feedback.
· Unit 8: Submit the entire research paper. 100 Points

First, select a specific disability or disorder. Some possible topics for your research paper are: Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Selective Mutism, and Separation Anxiety Disorder.
Content and Format
Your research-informed, written paper must include:
A. Etiology of the Disability or Disorder
1. Definition
2. Causes or Theory
3. Assessment for meeting eligibility criteria (two or more assessments)
4. Characteristics:
a. Research and review literature (course materials and at least five (5) scholarly/medical/research based resources)
b. Research, select and view a videotaped observation(s) of a child with the specific disability.
c. Compare and contrast the characteristics from both sources. Write a brief summary.
B. Educational Implications
1. Philosophical Approach
2. Define and describe the learning and developmental characteristics of a student with your selected disability. (Make connections between developmental domains and your research from Section A.)
3. Teaching Strategies/Intervention:
a. Use your researched literature and observed video(s) to describe how you would include a child with this disability in your classroom. Include classroom environment, type of services, adaptations, and supportive equipment such as assistive technology or a wheelchair.
b. Describe a variety of observation and assessment methods — a minimum of two each:
Observation Examples: data collection including observation anecdotals, running records, checklists, tallies, and teacher-made formative assessments
Assessment Examples: Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ), Brigance Screen, Preschool Assessment Framework (PAF), Devereaux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA)
c. Reflect and articulate the knowledge gained from data-driven decision-making practices.
4. Partnership with Families:
a. Describe two ways to build home-school connections, learn from families’ observations, and reciprocate effective teaching strategies in both settings
5. Local Educational Programs/Resources:
a. List at least two educational programs in your community that service children with this disability. Provide a one sentence description about each program/resource.
6. Ethical Responsibilities to the Child
Explain how you would intentionally apply one ideal and one principle from: NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment
C. Social Implications
1. Local resources and support programs/groups: List at least two community programs that welcome and support families of children with this disability. Provide a one sentence description of each.
2. Professional publications specific to this disability: Identify at least two; provide a one sentence description of each.
3. Professional organizations: Identify at least two; provide a one sentence description of each.
4. Societal Response and any stigma associated with the disability
