Of course, some muscle movements are less obvious than others. The nervous system sends messages throughout the body, which the muscles respond to. This process is called the mechanism of muscle contraction. While there are many steps involved in how muscles function, this process can be summarized in three main parts.
Chemical reactions are triggered in the muscular system after receiving a message from the nervous system.
A contraction occurs. This is when the chemical reactions cause the muscle fibers to reorganize (or move) themselves, shortening the muscle.
The signal from the nervous system ceases, and the chemical reaction causes the muscle fibers to return back to their previous state, and the muscle relaxes to await its next task.

The muscular system in the body is truly incredible. With over 600 muscles, each responsible for carrying out different functions of the body, the muscular system can seem pretty complex. The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in the body, and it’s named for its location and size. Found in the lower backside, this muscle allows the body to do many things such as walking and running. The smallest muscle can be found in the ear. The stapedius muscle helps stabilize the stapes in the ear, which are the smallest bones in the body, allowing us to hear sound.
In the human body, there is both light muscle and dark muscle. How dark a muscle appears is determined by how much iron the muscle has. Lighter muscles generally indicate require less oxygen to operate. Muscles in our trunk and core are examples of lighter muscles, and they maintain the body’s posture over the course of each day without exerting a great deal of energy. The muscles in our legs and arms, on the other hand, need more oxygen to function. Since they need more oxygen, the body supplies it to them with a red protein called myoglobin, which gives these muscles a darker color.
