Here is the question:
There are four levels of measurement(Nominal level,Ordinal level,Interval level,Ratio level). There are also several implications for which level is needed or desired, based on the purpose of the research and the relationship (or association) among the variables involved.
Identify the four levels of measurement and give examples (not from the text) of each. Include the answer to the following question.
Why might a variable be measured (captured) on one level versus another?

There are four different levels of measurement. They are nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. Nominal measurement are the variables whose traits have only the characteristics of all possible responses and mutual association with a select group. They provide names or labels for characteristics, but there is no logical order to them (Maxfield & Babbie, 2016). An example would be where a person resides such as suburbs, a town, or a city. Ordinal measurements are variables where characteristics are ordered by rank or placed in a logical order, but they do not allow you to tell how far one attribute is greater or less than from another (Maxfield & Babbie, 2016). An example would the public opinion about the performance of police on a scale of 1-5 where 1 is very poorly, 2 is poorly, 3 is neutral, 4 is good, and 5 is very good. Interval measurement are where some variables with meaning are separated by distance (Maxfield & Babbie, 2016). An example of interval measurement would be time. Ratio measurements are characteristics based on a true zero point of a variable (Maxfield & Babbie, 2016). An example would be the income of a person.
A variable may be measured on one level versus another based on the analytical use of a given variable. Some variables are limited to a certain level of measurement. If a variable will be used in an assortment of ways where different levels of measurement occur, you want to achieve the highest level of measurement possible for your research. Ratio, a higher-level measurement, can be reduced to a lower measurement such as ordinal or nominal. However, a lower-level measurement cannot be converted to a higher-level measurement (Maxfield & Babbie, 2016).

The four levels of measurement ranking from lowest to highest are nominal, ordinal, Interval and ratio (Maxfield, 2015, p.88). The nominal level consists of the data can only be categorized. An example of this is would be categorizing people by their blood type. Next is the ordinal level which the data can be categorized and ranked by order. An example of this is asking people to rank their pain on a scale of 1-5. The interval level is next which is the data that can be categorized, ranked, and evenly spaced. An example of this could be a person’s credit score (200-800) which demonstrates that there is order and the difference between two values is meaningful. Lastly, ratio is the highest level of measurement and it is the data that can be categorized, ranked, evenly spaced, and has a natural zero. An example of this is collecting heights from a group of people.
You might use one level of measurement versus another because of the information that you are trying to discover. Typically, you will get more information with some than with others, providing a finer tuned level of measurement based upon your research needs.
