Mayo Clinic states that the side effects of a mental illness include:
Feeling sad or down
Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate,
Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt
Extreme mood changes of highs and lows
Withdrawal from friends and activities
Significant tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping
Detachment from reality (delusions), paranoia or hallucinations
Inability to cope with daily problems or stress
Trouble understanding and relating to situations and to people
Problems with alcohol or drug use
Major changes in eating habits
Sex drive changes
Excessive anger, hostility or violence
Suicidal thinking
These symptoms can also turn into physical symptoms consisting of stomach pains and other body aches. Now this list is quite extensive and as you can imagine, would make for poor employee morale, relationships, financial hardships, a lack of education and the list could go on. The lack of education relates into our funding we need to provide to individuals to support those who could not get a higher education to help equip them to earn higher wages. Problems with drugs and alcohol relates to more funding needed for police forces, court systems and rehabilitation centers. Suicidal thinking fills our hospitals that are already over-loaded. Lack of motivation and energy causes businesses to have to hire and pay more in employee expenses to meet demands which contributes to our higher cost of living.
It has been found that mental health disorders cost more in government funds than any chronic somatic disease such as cancer or diabetes. This fact is mind boggling given the high expenses associated with cancer and diabetes. Not only is the cost of mental health services rising, the rate it is rising is even faster due to the quantity of people suffering from mental illness. The lack of resources for mental health contributes to the economic pressures as well. A government that cannot support their people is one that will face economic changes.

In all honesty though, is mental health really on the rise? Or is just more accepted and known in this day? This article sheds some light that really got me questioning this. Just less than twenty years ago there was a negative stigma regarding mental illness. People were seen as “crazy”, “sick”, “dangerous”, “lazy”, etc. These judgments were strong enough that I believe many people did not come out in the open about their mental state. Over the years the attitude about mental illness has changed which I believe has created the demand for more resources then in the past. At the same time though, it has also made us I believe a little too understanding of these symptoms that we are allowing our economy be effecting by the natural symptoms of depression. When we were ashamed of these symptoms, people were able to at least hide it enough to get through life.
