Project #1: Public Relations Activity

For this project you are going to assume the head of a public relations team that works with sports celebrities. Your client has asked your team to handle a rather embarrassing moment for them.

Your first step as team leader is to complete an investigation to determine the situation that your client has become a part of.

We will need to use the 5W approach to obtaining the facts of the situation (the 5W’s of reporting – who, what, when, where, why and how). Of course, we will have to use your creativity to make up the answers, as this is a fictitious situation (a situation that you must also make up). You may, however, model your situation on a real situation. Please use discretion in determining the situation that your client is involved in.

Once we have investigated we will now writ our answer in the form of a summary paragraph describing the situation your client. You will use this information in your next project.

Hand in your summary paragraph – essentially examining/revealing the situation by answering the 5W’s.

Project #2: Writing a Memorandum

Using the 5W’s you compiled from project #1, we will make a memorandum for your public relations team that alerts them to the impending press release about your client. Use the format for the memorandum that is included in this lesson (PDF PowerPoint) to generate a memo that is appropriate for your purpose and audience.
