Instructions
This assignment builds on the work you did in Weeks 4 and 5, during which you created a tentative thesis statement for your five-paragraph classification essay, composed an outline of your main points and details for your body paragraphs in your five-paragraph classification essay, and practiced, in discussion, writing a full body paragraph for your five-paragraph classification essay.
Now, in your Week 6 assignment, you will use all of that preparation, along with this week’s lesson and textbook readings, as your guide to composing a full draft of your five-paragraph classification essay: introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs, conclusion paragraph.
Please be sure to use this checklist to make sure you have completed the requirements.
A successful classification essay draft will include the following:
Introduction paragraph
Hooks the reader with an engaging introduction and a clear thesis in the classification mode that conveys the main idea/purpose
3 full, rich body paragraphs, using the PIE method described below (Point, Illustrations, Explanation):
Clear points/topic sentences that use transition and directly support your thesis
Specific supporting details in each body paragraph that illustrate your point, making sure to include transitional techniques for flow between sentences
Brief explanation of how the supporting details are relevant to your purpose
*Note: Please also review Week 3, Lesson 2 for a reminder of how to plan and write good body paragraphs with a topic sentence and details.
Conclusion paragraph
Reiterates the purpose of the essay without restating the thesis word-for-word
Leaves the reader with a powerful impression via a look to the bigger picture
In the final draft, you will continue to develop these paragraphs and refine your writing.
Note: No research is allowed. These ideas and details must come from your own experiences and knowledge only.
