“Wholeness is also one of the definitive subjects of story: how it is lost, searched for, and found again, or perhaps achieved at a new level”
TRANSCRIPT SOURCE OF THE QUOTE: There are still more properties of interdependence in Story. So far we have considered the interdependence of stories on one another; but there is also the interdependence of stories with people, the biological organism with which stories have the closest connection.
We might say this connection is symbiotic; stories and people both need one another to thrive.
To put it simply: stories are answers to human needs. The need of the story creator, the need of the storyteller, the need of the audience member; what is remarkable is that these needs can be entirely different, not only arising from different life experiences but reflecting fundamentally different issues of the human condition.
Every filmmaker has surely experienced, as I have many times, an audience member expressing appreciation for something their film did [1] that bore no relation to anything the filmmaker was aware of. Most performance storytellers don’t know what story they are going to tell until they stand in front of their audience. [2] Their subjective experience is that it is the presence of the audience that calls forth the needed story from the teller’s repertoire.
Almost every storyteller I interviewed used the same words to describe this, telling me that the story lives between the teller and the audience.
The work of stories is ultimately not on people but between people. It’s the work of wholeness, of making whole. A story has the capacity to manifest a perceptible wholeness, unlike life, whose wholeness is too vast to be perceived, and unlike our lives, whose wholeness is yet to be revealed.
Wholeness is also one of the definitive subjects of story: how it is lost, searched for, and found again, or perhaps achieved at a new level. This is work we are all engaged in and it is where stories work with us, or, in the context we are examining here, work between us.
It is not only that stories connect us. In fact, stories are all that connects us, once we look beyond the connection of blood. The social fabric is woven of story. If the substance of that fabric is a myriad of small acts of generosity and care, each of those acts took place within a context of, was motivated and affirmed by, Story. What’s more, as this principle suggests, it is not only we who are doing the work, it is Story. A story is not only a phenomenon of inter-dependence, it’s a revelation of our inter-dependence.
