The speaker in Billy Collins’ poem “Introduction to Poetry” (733) uses metaphors to describe different approaches to poetry, some of which the speaker condones and others of which he clearly does it. Which if any of the metaphors in Collins’ poem resonates with your experience reading poetry in this class or in the past? If none of the figurative comparisons in the poem apply, create your own metaphor and explain how it captures your experience. What does reading a poem compare to, and what does your comparison reveal about the strategies you use and your objectives?
