I use social media and have accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok. As far as using them regularly, the only one that I 100% check at least once a day is Facebook, and I will use TikTok a couple of times a week. As far as the others, I really don’t use them, and will only really open those apps if I’m really bored. I do have the apps installed on my phone for Instagram and Snapchat, but I only use Twitter if I am looking for something specific, and if so, I will only do so on my computer. Mainly I use social media (again, mostly Facebook) for entertainment, but I also rely on it for information about my job, and anything interesting going on in my area. For my job, Facebook is how I communicate with my coworkers about switching shifts, or if something happened at work and someone wasn’t there, we’ll post on the page. I also follow a lot of theatres on Facebook, and they will post information about shows and auditions, which is really the only place to see that information most of the time.
As someone who is pretty far into a Communications degree, I have absolutely had to question the impact that social media has on my life, and other people’s lives, as that is the main focus for multiple classes for this degree. Most of the time, I am looking at it through the angle of how social media affects politics, as that is something that has become a big talking point, but I have also had to look at it from the perspective of how it affects mental health and regular socialization.
I haven’t thought of deactivating any of my social media, mostly because I really only use Facebook, and I need it to keep up to date with information for my job. I know that if I don’t want to use other platforms, I don’t have to, and already often don’t, so there’s no need for me to feel that extreme need to delete them altogether.
I think social media has a negative impact on mental health, and think the best explanation was detailed in the provided video. Social currency, or adding value to an individual as a product, creates a kind of competitiveness that we can also see in regular marketing. When one company has a successful campaign, now other companies have to adjust to bring back consumers. On social media, people are constantly in competition for other people’s attention and are always trying to up their game to keep that attention. When we have placed our value ourselves in the hands of others, if we don’t see that value reciprocated in the way we wanted, it can be damaging. On top of that, to see that value is given to others, in form of reactions, comments, retweets, etc., can then create a trace of bitterness, and force people to make comparisons of themselves to others, which can be damaging as well.
