For your Final Exam, choose and respond to one question from each of the lists below, for a total of four essay responses. These questions are based on readings from your textbook and the themes and content we have covered over the course of the semester. Each Effective essay response should be a minimum of 1 – 2 pages double spaced, and should adhere to APA standards for formatting and citation. You are not required to conduct outside research, but it is expected that you back up your claims with evidence from the text and other course content we have covered this term, cited in APA format. You will be assessed based on the PSCI2050 Assignment Rubric.
Essay 1
1. What are the major issues of debate regarding media ownership and regulation? Lay out the arguments for both sides (including the information trends media critics and scholars are concerned about) and discuss the implications for democracy.
2. What is the role of the media in democracies? What should it be? How well do the media in the United States fulfill that role? Is our media all that it should be in democratic terms? Why or why not?
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of big business control over substantial portions of the public’s news supply?
4. What are the national security challenges of a free press? What challenges does the post–9/11 national security environment present for journalists? What are the tradeoffs between transparency and security?
Essay 2
1. Discuss the various ways that changes to the modern media landscape have also dramatically altered the practice and profession of journalism.
2. Has the modern media environment lived up to expectations for a digital democracy? Why or why not?
3. The expansion of media choice has produced the ability for citizens to engage in partisan selective exposure. What is this behavior and why are some worried that it may contribute to societal levels of political polarization? Are there any reasons to think partisan selective exposure may not polarize?
4. What are the news production constraints that shape the news? How do these influence news content in ways that are important in a democratic society?
Essay 3
1. What are the relative costs and benefits of melding political activism with journalism? When is it good? When could it be harmful? Should it be encouraged or discouraged?
2. Are journalists political actors? Should they be? Why or why not?
3. What are various ways that presidential digital communication has evolved in recent years? What are some of the implications for citizenship and governance?
4. Describe and assess the consequences of media-dominated politics. How are media so influential? Is their role and power appropriate? Is the role of the media too powerful, not powerful enough, or just about right? Explain.
Essay 4
1. What are the various reasons we see so much negativity in campaigns and in campaign related news? What are the reasons so much campaign negativity might be problematic? What are the reasons it might be beneficial?
2. Link the various information biases or structural biases we have learned about this term to the commercially oriented media system we have in the United States. Does our media system lead to the pervasiveness of such biases? How? What does all this together mean for what we get in our political news? Are there any solutions?
3. What should citizen-relevant news contain? What kinds of information do democratic citizens need for effective participation in governance? To what extent does our current media system provide such news?
4. How are media outlets coping with the move away from the ad revenue model of journalism? How will good journalism be financed in the future? What successful models exist now?
