Theory can be aimed at supporting discussions of practice, policies and procedures within education. Since the teacher plays a complex role in the classroom, we will look at how theoretical choices of the teacher can impact the direction the middle grades learning community undertakes.
FIVE THEORISTS SELECTED:
1. Jean Piaget
2. Howard Gardner
3. Jerome Bruner
4. John Dewey
5. Erik Erickson
Give a thorough explanation of the theory’s main points, provide examples/applications of the theory in action and how it relates back to the five domains we have referenced in class with regards to young adolescent’s growth. The graphic organizer will need to include:
I. A brief biography of the education theorist
II. Main points of the theory that the theorist most connects to
a. Make sure that you define the theory clearly, along with its essential elements and how they relate back to the performance of young adolescents
III. How the theory is used in the delivery of content in the classroom and how the learning can be assessed at the middle school level
a. Teaching Strategies (ex: Think-Pair-Share)
b. Assessment Strategies
IV. How the theory relates back to each of the 5 domains
a. Remember, we discussed taking a holistic approach to educating young adolescents in terms of their social, emotional, and psychological needs so identify how your selected theory ties back into each of these areas:
i. motivation
ii. learning
iii. personal
iv. social
v. emotional development
Organize the content of your graphic organizer in a meaningful way and demonstrate that you have a thorough understanding of the theories you select by making them applicable to classroom practices.
