A Sharing Your Own Experience in an Informal Document
Have you ever sat down to write a document and thought, where do I even begin? Sitting and staring at a blank page while trying to develop ideas can be frustrating. Trying to write an essay, a memo, a professional email, or any other document in one sitting can be difficult and often leads to writer’s block. Prewriting is an easy step to avoid frustration and writer’s block. Prewriting is an excellent way to consider what you already know about a topic, begin generating ideas, and plan to write.

A Writing a Draft of the Personal Document
Revising your writing provides you the chance to ensure your ideas are clear and effective prior to submitting the final draft. At times it can be challenging to see problematic areas in your own writing; this is where peer feedback can be very beneficial.
Prepare: Complete the assigned Unit 4 Reading and Learning Activities. Preview the Unit 4 Assignment details.
Review the topic ideas and prewriting you posted to the Unit 3 Discussion Board as well as the feedback you received from your classmates. Make any necessary adjustments to your topic, audience, and main point. That will prepare you to write a rough draft of your blog post.
Post: Post Your Draft
Using your prewriting ideas and feedback that helped you to choose one topic, audience, and purpose, write a 2–3-paragraph rough draft of your Unit 4 Assignment and post it to the Discussion Board. This is going to be a rough draft, so do not worry if it needs editing and revision. All drafts need work.
Include a bit of self-reflection as well so the class knows how to best help you:
What aspects of your draft do you think could use development?
What aspects of your draft do you think are strong?
Which areas of your draft are you still working on?
Include an open-ended question about any issue your initial post raises which your classmates can help you with.
Respond: Respond to classmates’ postings
Make comments and ask questions about two classmates’ drafts. Be sure to address the following points:
What was the purpose of the document?
Who is the intended audience?
If you were the audience, would you be helped by the writer’s points and use of personal experience? How so?
Are there places where more needs to be said?
Using your knowledge of the revision process, what suggestions could you make for revising this draft?

Generate a list of changes in your field of study. Select the one change you think is most relevant to write about and that you know something about.
The Discussion Board activities in Units 5 and 6 will help you in your writing process.
Post: Write and post your initial Discussion Board post
Review your prewriting activity in the Learning Activities assignment. Based upon what you wrote there, identify a possible topic that you plan to write on for your academic essay and explain briefly why you have chosen this focus. This is a preliminary idea so you may end up changing your focus based on feedback from your classmates, but starting to plan for your Assignment can help you manage your time in the next few weeks.
Then, post a preliminary thesis for that topic, applying what you learned about strong thesis statements in the Reading and Learning Activities, along with an informal outline that identifies at least two to three supporting details. Remember that the more detailed your outline is, the stronger your plan for success in the academic essay will be.
Include an open-ended question about any issue your initial post raises which your classmates can help you with.

A Compose a Draft Academic Essay
Prepare: Complete the Unit 6 Reading and Learning Activities.
Step 2 Preview the academic essay Assignment.
Post: Write and post your Unit 6 Discussion Board initial post.
Compose a rough draft of your first 3 paragraphs of the Unit 6 academic essay Assignment. Be sure to develop your draft using your own ideas about the change in your field of study you are writing about. Use your own thoughts and observations to explain either what caused the change or to analyze the effects of this change.
Post your first 3 paragraphs, but if you are further along in the drafting process and your draft is longer, that is not a problem. Remember that a draft will have weaknesses, so do not hesitate to post your draft because it is not perfect. You will receive helpful feedback on your draft from your instructor and classmates.
Respond: Respond to classmates’ postings
Respond to at least two classmates’ drafts. Apply what you have learned about peer-reviews in the Unit 6 Reading and Learning Activities to offer your classmates specific, constructive, and helpful feedback. Do not grade your classmates’ drafts or comment on grammar. Avoid simply identifying problems. Instead, focus on one or two areas of the draft (e.g., development of ideas, topic sentences, or organization) and offer suggestions for how the classmates might improve on these areas. Remember to ask questions that engage your classmates as well.
Review: Use the feedback you received in step 2 to help you revise and edit your first 3 paragraphs, write the rest of your essay, and get it ready for submission to the Unit 6 Assignment Dropbox.

Prepare: Complete the Unit 7 Reading and Activities sections.
Post: Make your initial post to the Discussion Board.
Locate one claim or point that needs to be strengthened within one body paragraph of your Unit 6 Assignment. Then find one reliable and relevant source that will support it. Include the URL link to the source in your post so your classmates can review the source.
Then, explain why this source is reliable and relevant to your paper.
Select a body paragraph from your Unit 6 Assignment that needs research information to support, develop, or clarify ideas effectively. Then, paraphrase and incorporate the relevant source from the source you selected into that paragraph to help clarify, develop, or explain your point or claim in that paragraph. Post both the original paragraph from your Unit 6 Assignment and the revised paragraph that now includes research information. Do not worry about citing the source correctly — you will learn to do that in Unit 8. Instead, use a signal phrase inside the paragraph (like “According to Smith…”) to introduce the source information within the paragraph.
Include an open-ended question about any issue your initial post raises which your classmates can help you with.
Respond: Respond to at least two classmates’ initial Discussion Board posts. Be sure to briefly review their source and comment on the reliability and relevance of the source your classmate has chosen. Offer suggestions for how your classmate might more effectively paraphrase and incorporate the source into the revised paragraph. Make suggestions for other, more reliable sources that could be used or more relevant information that needs to be included in the paragraph to support the classmate’s main point or claim. Remember, effective teamwork this week can help you and your classmates ensure you have reliable sources and are ready to hit the ground running and begin integrating paraphrased research into your draft.
After you receive feedback on the paragraph you chose to revise for the Unit 7 Discussion Board, continue working on revising the other paragraphs in your draft, one paragraph at a time. This will prepare you for success in the Unit 8 Discussion Board and Unit 8 Assignment.

A Unit 2 Assignment: Read Good Writers, Become a Better Writer
Before a personal trainer can develop a workout and nutrition plan, he or she will meet with the client, ask questions, and determine the client’s current strength and ability. Writing instructors use a similar process to help students diagnose their writing strengths and weaknesses and develop a training plan.
A diagnostic writer’s response is intended to help you and your professor learn more about your individual writing strengths and weaknesses. The feedback you will receive from your professor will help you think more about your writing and what you need to address to strengthen your personal, academic, and professional communication.

Unit 4 Assignment
A Expressing Yourself Informally
For the Unit 4 Assignment, you will write a 1–1.5-page, double spaced, informal and personal blog post on an issue that is in some way relevant to your field of study and that you have personal experience with.
According to The Social Psychology Network, a blog, “short for “web log,” is an online journal or record of sequential postings with news, commentary, or other material” (2017). Like an essay, a blog post establishes and develops a clear point about a topic or issue. Depending on the topic, audience, and purpose, a blog can be formal or informal. A blog written by an individual, for example, tends to be about his or her experience with the topic and is written in first person.
Imagine for this Assignment that you have created your own blog site and that you are writing a post for your blog site. This specific blog post should establish a clear main point about your chosen topic, use your personal experience to develop that main point, and establish a connection with your non-professional audience through showing them how your experience might be of value in helping them in some way.
Examples might include:
If you are in the medical field and have experience with taking care of family members who are sick, you might write a blog post to other caretakers who are tending to family members, perhaps showing them a way they can avoid the stress that caretaking will create for them.
If you are in the law enforcement field, though you may not have experience with being a police officer, you might use your experience as a parent to write to other parents about what they might do to help their children to not get involved in gangs, if you have any relevant experience with it or know people who have.
If you are in the field of education, you may not be an experienced teacher with a degree, but you no doubt have experience either as a student or parent and could write a blog post to other first year college students, offering them a suggestion for how to manage their time or avoid procrastination on assignments.
Generating Ideas for Your Blog Post Topic:
Brainstorm your experiences: What personal experiences do you have with issues of ANY sort that are in some way related to your field of study?
Talk with others: Classmates, friends and family, WC tutors, your instructors.
Review this document for links to blogs and articles in your field of study. Writers often identify something they want to write about by responding to what others have written. You might read a blog post about the causes of homelessness in the US and then write your own blog post to people in your community suggesting a way they might help solve this problem in your community.
You will also be engaging in Discussion Board activities in Units 3 and 4 to help you in your writing process.
In Unit 3 Discussion Board, you will post as many possible topic ideas as you want. Posting your possible topics, audience, and purpose allows you to get feedback from your instructor and classmates. This feedback will help you decide on a topic and make any necessary adjustments before you move to the drafting stage.
In Unit 4 Discussion Board, you will post a draft of your blog post and a plan for revising this draft. The feedback you receive from your instructor and classmates will help you to revise and strengthen your blog post and prepare it for submission as your Unit 4 Assignment.
Be sure that your Unit 4 Assignment meets the following requirements:
Focuses on one specific point about the issue being written about
Uses personal experience to develop ideas; avoid research
Connects with the audience and establishes relevance of the topic to them
Demonstrates substantial revision of the Unit 4 Discussion Board post draft
Uses appropriate informal language, depending upon topic, audience, and purpose
Is organized into 3–5 well-developed paragraphs, 1–1.5 double-spaced pages
Utilizes transition devices to connect ideas
Applies Standard American English and avoids distracting grammar and punctuation errors
Demonstrates 6th Edition APA formatting, including title page
Cites any and all uses of source information (quotes, ideas, paraphrases) both in the references page and in text where the source is used

Unit 6 Assignment
A Expressing Your Ideas for an Academic Audience and Plan for Additional Research
Apply what you have learned about formal language and academic writing to write your own 2- 2 ½ pages draft of an essay that analyzes a relevant change in your field of study. Your paper must analyze either what caused this relevant change or analyze what effect this change has had. It will also create a research plan for further revision, research, and development.
This Unit 6 Assignment essay draft will then be revised to include source information and become your Unit 8 Assignment.
To identify a relevant change in your field of study, consider the following options:
Brainstorm a list of changes in your field of which you are already aware
Talk to others, including friends, family members, classmates, and professors
Do a quick Google search to create a list of changes in the field
Identify topic ideas by reading an article from this list of articles
For a more detailed description of each option, consult this document.
As you identify a change to discuss, be careful with your choice of topic to ensure that you are actually writing about a specific change. Diabetes itself, for example, is not a change. The skyrocketing number of children with diabetes in the last decade is a change. Technology is too broad a topic that includes countless changes and would not work for this Assignment; however, limiting the issue of technology to a specific technological change, like the increased use of cloud computing, will work for this Assignment. Be sure also that the change has occurred and that it is not a change you would like to see happen.
To help you succeed on this Assignment, you will post your prewriting work about the topic that you choose for your essay to the Unit 5 Discussion Board.
You will then use feedback you received on your topic idea to make necessary revisions and then post a rough draft of your essay to the Unit 6 Discussion Board. The feedback you receive on your rough draft will then help you to revise your draft for submission as the Unit 6 Assignment.
You must also include an additional 1 paragraph research plan paragraph at the end of your paper as part of the Unit 6 Assignment. This plan identifies what you specifically think you need to do in Units 7–8 to research your topic, support your ideas, and strengthen your draft.
Be sure your Unit 6 Assignment meets the following requirements:
Includes 4–5 fully developed paragraphs
Focuses on one specific, relevant change that has already occurred
Analyzes either cause or effect and does not take a position or make a recommendation
Develops the main point through your own thoughts and observations, not through research
Includes an additional research plan
Applies APA 6th Edition format
Avoids the use of outside sources at this point. However, if you use any source in any way in this draft, you must cite the source both in a references page and in text, whether you are quoting or paraphrasing

Unit 8 Assignment
A Final Draft
Apply what you have learned about locating, paraphrasing, incorporating, and citing relevant and reliable secondary source information to complete the following Unit 8 Assignment:
By now, you have submitted your Unit 6 Assignment. That draft of an essay analyzes a relevant change in your field of study. You also have received feedback on this essay draft from your instructor and classmates.
You will now use this feedback to substantially revise your Unit 6 academic essay draft to submit as your Unit 8 Assignment.
Your goal is to strengthen the Unit 6 Assignment draft, improve the introduction and conclusion and organization of the draft, as well as to incorporate and cite three to four relevant and reliable secondary sources into the paper using APA format so that you support and further develop your ideas and claims.
Here are the steps to success on the Unit 8 Assignment:
In Unit 7, learn about reliable and relevant sources and identify three to four sources you can use to strengthen and develop the ideas in your draft. Your Unit 7 Discussion Board will allow you to post a revised paragraph from your draft where you add information from one of the sources you have selected. Then you can work on the other paragraphs in your draft independently to strengthen them.
In Unit 8, learn about APA citations and how to paraphrase your sources and cite them. In the Unit 8 Discussion Board, you will post another paragraph from your Unit 6 Assignment that you revise to include sources and citations, as well as a practice reference list of all your sources you plan to use in the paper.
Then, once you receive Discussion Board feedback on your paragraphs and citations, you will revise your Unit 6 Assignment draft fully, to include and cite all source information used, and this will become your Unit 8 Assignment. It is the final version of the paper you began in Units 5 and 6.
Be sure that your Unit 8 Assignment submission:
Demonstrates that you have substantially revised your Unit 6 Assignment.
Establishes and develops a clear main point about your topic that is original and insightful.
Analyzes either the cause or effect of the change you are addressing, without taking a position or writing to persuade.
Organizes ideas logically and demonstrates paragraph unity and connection of ideas through the use of transition devices.
Demonstrates that you have strengthened, supported, and developed your ideas through the incorporation of three to four relevant and reliable secondary sources from either the Library or published on the Web.
Demonstrates that you can paraphrase relevant and reliable source information rather than relying solely on quotes from the sources.
Applies 6th Edition APA formatting to give credit to all source information and ideas, whether you quote, paraphrase, or summarize these sources.
Utilizes APA style to format the paper, including the title page, body pages, margins, in-text citations, and references page citations.
Follows the conventions of Standard American English.
Is 5–6 paragraphs or 2–2.5 pages long, excluding title page and references page.

Question 1 Apply what you have learned about reading comprehension to understanding this short article entitled “A Heavy Duty Job.” The article, written by Daniel McGinn, was published in Newsweek.
Apply the BEFORE READING, DURING READING, AND AFTER READING suggestions and then summarize the article briefly.
“A Heavy Duty Job”
For nurses, it’s a job almost as unpleasant as changing bedpans: moving heavy patients from stretchers to beds and back again. With the average U.S. nurse now in her mid-40s and hospitalized Americans growing more supersized each year, patient-schlepping is putting more nurses in danger of being hospitalized themselves. The American Nurses Association estimates 52 percent of its members complain of chronic back pain; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurses are more at risk for back strains than construction workers. So at the ANA’s biennial convention in Minneapolis this week, nurses will discuss a key lobbying goal: getting more hospitals to enact “no lift” policies requiring that machines, rather than nurses, be responsible for “patient handling.”
Many hospitals that specialize in bariatric surgery on obese patients are already equipped with hydraulic equipment–imagine a small crane with a sling on it–for that job. The technology is also widely used in Europe. But in the past year, more U.S. hospitals have begun buying simpler devices: plastic air mattresses with small holes on the bottom. The air mattress slips under the patient, a small pump inflates it and air escapes through the holes, reducing the friction as the patient is pulled between beds. “It’s like an upside-down air-hockey table, and the patient’s the puck,” says Dave Davis of HoverTech International. James Weedling of rival Patient Transfer Industries says: “What’s really driving the product now is Worker Compensation claims.”
Proponents say the $3,000 devices pay for themselves in a matter of months. Says Sandy Wise of Novation, a Texas firm that helps hospitals buy equipment states: “This is a supply that will become a necessity.” If they weren’t so pricey and electrified, they also look like they’d be fun at a pool party.
Enter a short summarization of the article below.
Nurses have a lot of demands on the job , For example, the physical demands and mental demands . Nurses are required to move and lift patients daily. Because most of the nurses are aged in the mid-40’s , each Nurse face a health risk increase . Medical devices are implemented to assist Nurses with the lifting so they don’t have to risk their own health.

Question 2 Read the following email from an accountant to a customer detailing a strategy for cutting costs and determine which sentence would be most appropriate for the blank / underlined section.
TO: Johnny Smith, Vice President of Finances, Highland Shoes
FROM: Maggie York, York Accounting Inc.
DATE: June 3, 2013
SUBJECT: Cost Cutting Measure
Johnny, in our meeting last week, you expressed a concern with your company’s financial situation. I have since reviewed your 1st and 2nd quarter financial reports and think one budget item needs to be reconsidered.
It appears that your company is spending 25% more on advertising than your local competitors. Your company currently relies exclusively on print ads in the local newspaper and on flyers. Print ads are extremely expensive as you know, and may not be cost effective. They may not reach a large enough audience.
I would like to schedule a meeting with you at your convenience to review your options. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________You may reach a larger audience and spend less by advertising on Facebook and similar social media sites.
Please let me know when you would like to meet to discuss this option.
Regards,
Maggie York
Question options:
a) You really need to rethink the advertising company you hired.
b) A less costly plan may include reducing local print ads and targeting your audience through electronic advertising venues.

Question 1 Imagine you are a supervisor in a company with 60 employees. One of your duties is maintaining the budget. Lately you notice that the costs for your copying machine and supplies have increased by 43 percent. Observation and discussion with some of the employees suggest that some employees use the copying machine for personal use. Repair costs may have increased because more people than the two trained office managers have access to the machine.
Why are audience and purpose important considerations when writing to your employees about this situation?
The audience is important because they are employees and the purpose would be the determine why the cost of company copy machine has increased . I think the employees who are reading this message needs to understand how the cost involved have increased and provide a solution if some employees have been using the copy machine for personal use there needs to be a company policy which states this. A solution would be to have a company policy in place and a way to do so is to inform all employees that personal use of copy machine is limited to supervisors and managers and should they need to use it please ask a manager to assist them.
