38789World Literature I – Final Essay Assignment

I. ASSIGNMENT PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES:
• Your assignment is to write an essay that is 1200-1750 words (4-5 pages) in length.
• Your essay should be formatted according to MLA guidelines: i.e., double-spaced, equal one-inch margins, using a 12-point font with a title, header, appropriate in-text citations, and a Works Cited page.
• The essay should demonstrate clarity, conciseness, logical organization (that means a clear beginning, a middle, and an end)
• Your essay should follow Standard Edited English rules / correct grammar.
Your purpose is to make a claim about how one-three of the reading assignments presents a theme or character related to that theme, and then prove that claim by using passages from the text and your own commentary to justify your thesis statement.

II. DEVELOPMENT:
To write a convincing essay, you will need to explore your chosen reading selection(s) in greater depth.

You should develop your essay carefully choosing supporting information from details found in the text. Many of you have already done this in your discussion postings and exam essays.

NOTE: You do not have to do any outside research, but you may elect to do so. Make sure to follow the MLA guidelines for citing someone else’s work if you use outside research.

All essays must include a WORKS CITED page. If you have not done any outside secondary research, you will include citations for the reading assignments you have chose to write about.

III. ORGANIZATION:
• There is no single, “correct” way to organize your essay. You should, however, give your readers “road signs” for the main ideas you’re presenting.
• A clear focus statement and transitions between paragraphs and sentences are important.
• Choose a pattern of organization that not only enhances readability but also makes the greatest impact on your audience given your purpose.
