Metaphase I: (pg. 13) Just between Prophase I and Metaphase I (Prometaphase I), the spindle fibers attach to the replicated chromosomes at the centromeres. The spindle fibers then move the chromosomes to the equator (an imaginary line similar to the Earth’s equator, also known as the metaphasic plate, located in between the poles of the cell as determined by the centrioles) of the cell. The tetrads line up along with equator with each chromosome on either side of the equator. 1. Lightly draw the equator half way between the centrioles. Label it. 2. Read all the way through steps 2a-e before drawing. Each chromosome of each of the tetrads will be directly across the equator from each other. This is also going to look like page 5 with the exception of the crossing-over parts. Each X should appear as a X laying on its side with its centromere on the other side of the equator from its member of the tetrad. a. As with the first Metaphase 1 you drew, the order of the Xs along the equator doesn’t matter, it’s just chance how they end up aligned on the equator. Just make sure the same lengths are across (the equator) from each other. Place the red one on top of the equator. It should have a little piece of blue at the end of the sister chromatid facing the equator! 2) Place the long blue X on the bottom of the equator. It should have a little piece of red at the end of the sister chromatid facing the equator! 3) The short Xs (one red and one blue) – the homologous pair in the long tetrad — should be on either side of the equator across from each other. There are no little other colored pieces on this one. 4) Remember the homologous pair is indicated by length (one short pair and one long pair), not color. The color represents who the chromosome was inherited from (mom or dad). There are no little other pieces on this one. 3. Draw the spindle fibers attached and come from each side of the chromosomes’ centromeres toward the centrioles, but not touching the centrioles. There is one spindle fiber per X. Also, include other spindle fibers that would move the remaining parts of the cell (such as organelles). Don’t forget that the spindle fibers should not touch or overlap any part of the chromosomes.
