Running head: DISCUSSION POST 1
DISCUSSION POST 2
Based on the readings in the Bible, I have learned that God can choose anyone to fulfill His purpose. And in the case of Hosea, He chose Gomer, a prostitute, and instructed Hosea to look beyond her past and marry her. Entering the marriage union reflects God's love, mercy, and forgiveness for His people ("Hosea 3," n.d.). He chose Hosea to show that even after we sin and break our covenant with Him, when we ask for forgiveness, he looks beyond our sinful past and forgives us. It shows the unconditional love He has for us. Based on this reading we learn that God used Gomer to show His love and forgiving nature.
Like Gomer cheating on Hosea, Christians tend to do the same thing when we sin. This was also seen when the Israelites would worship idols and break their covenant with God. When the covenant partner is unfaithful to God, He gets hurt. This hurt is justifiable because we are His children and should live according to His word. We should worship Him, love Him and honor Him. We are created in His likeliness, and in hurting Him, we also hurt ourselves and our relationship. If my partner cheated on me, I would be heartbroken and devastated. I believe God feels the same way or worse.
There is a parallel in God commanding Hosea to return to his wife and pay the price for her even after she cheated ("Hosea 3," n.d.). In the New Testament, for God to mend his relationship with His people, He sent His only son Jesus. Jesus was sent to the world, and He sacrificed Himself and died for our sins. Similar to the price Hosea paid for his wife, the price God paid was with the life of His son. God remained faithful and restored the broken relationship He had with His people.
