Thinking specifically about media influence, identify the characteristics of individuals likely to serve as role models through media exposure to the general public. Be specific about the learning situation and exposure, identifying characteristics or situations that make it more likely specific individuals will become role models.
Be sure to consider and answer the following questions: Why are particular individuals more likely to become role models? What characterizes the relationship between the learner and the role model? Using principles of learning discussed in this class, how would you explain role modeling behaviors? What role does gender, race, and/or ethnicity play in role modeling?
Now consider the research on violent video games and exposure to violent television. Does the evidence support the hypothesis that violence in the media creates aggressive behavior?

Module 1 Assignment
Introduction Video and Reaction: What we’re learning from online education
The major purpose of these final assignments in each module is to integrate the information you have learned throughout the current module and the course thus far, and to practice effective and professional communication of your ideas in various formats. For this assignment, you’ll be making a short video to introduce yourself to the professor and to explain your ideas about learning.
The reason you are making a video is because, as you already know, communication through only written information is not the only skill needed in today’s world. Being capable of communicating your ideas orally using professional body language and presentation skills is critical for job and career success. Creating videos will help you improve your technical and communication skills, which will be used in any career you pursue.
Successful completion of this activity meets Module Outcome 2.
This activity aligns with the career competencies of oral communication and digital technology.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Please create a short (2 minutes or less) video to introduce yourself, and to briefly react to the following video:
TED Talk: Daphne Coller – What we’re learning from online education . Retrieved from: https://www.ted.com/talks/daphne_koller_what_we_re_learning_from_online_education (Links to an external site.)
In your reaction, be sure to address the following:
– Learning is a “relatively permanent” change in behavior. So, the question is: What does “relatively permanent” mean to you? In your own words, what is learning?
– How do your ideas about learning compare with the definition of learning presented in this text?
– How do your ideas about learning compare with what is presented in the TED Talk regarding learning?
Briefly write out a script for yourself before you create the video. Scripts help you sound more focused and polished while keeping the information clear and concise. Follow the tips located here to maximize the impact of your script and video. Canvas allows you to create video right within our LMS. Follow the directions givien in the “Technical Guidance” document, found at the beginning of our course. Your video should be a maximum of 2 minutes long.

Module 2 Assignment
Applying the Principles of Classical Conditioning
Classical conditioning is a form of associative learning, learning produced by pairing of stimuli and responses in time and place. It contributes to likes and dislikes, emotional reactions, and reflex-like responses to things.
The major purpose of these final assignments in each module is to integrate the information you have learned throughout the current module and the course thus far, and to practice effective and professional communication of your ideas in various formats. This assignment requires you to apply the principles of classical conditioning and to video and write about the results.
Successful completion of this activity meets Module Outcome 4.
This activity aligns with the career competencies of oral communication and digital technology.
INSTRUCTIONS:
For this assignment, you will create an original demonstration of classical conditioning. Think of an example in your life of how classical conditioning has produced a positive emotional response, such as happiness or excitement. Now think of a negative emotional response, such as fear, anxiety, or anger. Choose one of these examples to share with us, and using the terms you’ve learned describe how classical conditioning produced this result.
You may choose to video a demonstration of your example and submit a brief description explaining your application. Alternatively, you may choose to create a voiceover multimedia presentation to demonstrate your example. In either instance, you need to orally describe the demonstration.
The situation you choose to demonstrate must be described in terms of classical conditioning. Within each description, identify or suggest the US, UR, CS, CR, as well as the principles likely to be at work.
It’s recommended that you briefly write out a script for yourself before you create the video or presentation. Scripts help you sound more focused and polished while keeping the information clear and concise. Follow the tips located at the beginning of our course to maximize the impact of your script and video.
Canvas allows you to create video right within our LMS, or you can use your phone or other video tool to create the video. If you need assistance, follow the directions provided in the “Technical Guidance” document, found at the beginning of our course.
If you choose to complete a multimedia presentation you should utilize images, writing, and video and/or audio (your voiceover, which is required). Your presentation can be completed in Powerpoint, Prezi, Powtoons, or another platform approved by your instructor.
Your video or presentation should be a maximum of 2 minutes long.

Module 4 Assignment
Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child?
Operant conditioning is often applied to “real world” situations. A classic example is using reinforcers and punishment to discipline children. Skinner and his followers demonstrated that reinforcement is more effective than punishment in shaping children’s behavior. Yet there still exists a wide variety of opinion over the best way to raise and discipline children, especially with regard to raising children within different cultures. For example, what is acceptable in one culture as discipline is considered abuse in another.
To demonstrate what you’ve learned during the last modules, you’ll write a paper that correctly and comprehensively addresses the questions asked about raising children.
The major purpose of these final assignments in each module is to integrate the information you have learned throughout the current module and the course thus far, and to practice effective and professional communication of your ideas in various formats. For this assignment, you’ll be writing a professional APA style paper and supporting your writing with scholarly sources.
You are writing an APA format paper this week to demonstrate your ability to clearly communicate in writing, support your writing with scholarly sources, and practice successfully using APA style. Being capable of communicating your ideas in writing is important for not only academic success, but in your job and career.
Successful completion of this activity meets Module Outcomes 3 & 4.
This activity aligns with the career competencies of written communication, critical thinking, and intercultural fluency.
Directions:
Read several sources of parenting advice offered in the popular media, locating some examples that favor reinforcement and others that favor punishment. What arguments does each side use to support its preferred parenting style? Be sure to discuss different cultures in your paper, and explain how child-rearing disciplinary practices may vary across populations.
What claims do your different sources make about shaping children’s behaviors and are those claims supported by scientific evidence? Identify specific scholarly sources demonstrating evidence-based scientific support for your writing. Be sure to properly cite and reference all of the sources you use in APA format.

Modeling Health
When we get sick, we often think of it as being due to biological factors. However, how much of disease and illness is learning by watching and learning from others?
The major purpose of these final assignments in each module is to integrate the information you have learned throughout the current module and the course thus far, and to practice effective and professional communication of your ideas in various formats. For this assignment, you’ll be writing a professional APA style paper and supporting your writing with scholarly sources.
You are writing an APA format paper this week to demonstrate your ability to clearly communicate in writing, support your writing with scholarly sources, and practice successfully using APA style. Being capable of communicating your ideas in writing is important for not only academic success, but in your job and career. Be sure to use the feedback you received on your paper submitted last week to improve your writing!
Successful completion of this activity meets Module Outcome 5.
This activity aligns with the career competencies of written communication, intercultural fluency, and critical thinking.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Think of a health issue that you, a family member, or friend has. Now identify ways in which this challenge could have been “learned” through modeling or observational learning. What cultural factors could have influenced this situation (think about gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, weight, and other characteristics that make up diverse societies)?
Using psychological theory and research, explain how being unhealthy can be learned through observational learning. Next, apply this model to identify applications for disease prevention. Provide scholarly resources, properly cited and referenced in APA format, to support your writing.

Module 6 Assignment
Conditioning and Commercials/Advertising
It’s no secret that psychology is often used to sell products and services to the unsuspecting consumer. This activity will help you synthesize some of the learning concepts learned throughout the course by analyzing how advertisements use learning principles like classical conditioning to influence buyers.
For example, a commercial for tires might portray a mother and baby driving on a dark, rainy night (fearful stimulus), implying that fear can be avoided by choosing the proper brand of tire. Another advertisement might depict a sexy model approaching a man drinking a particular brand of beer, suggesting that a man can attract a voluptuous woman (pleasant stimulus) by drinking the right kind of alcohol.
In a module focused on the influence of media, it’s only appropriate that this week you must create a multimedia presentation that incorporates media as the topic! For this activity you will need your own recordings of (or online access to) videos of at least two video (television or internet) commercials. Youtube is the easiest place to locate these, but of course there are other sources. You will create a short multimedia presentation that clearly and concisely demonstrates to the audience how the two commercials you’ve chosen use learning principles to sell product or services.
The major purpose of these final assignments in each module is to integrate the information you have learned throughout the current module and the course thus far, and to practice effective and professional communication of your ideas in various formats.
The reason you are creating a multimedia presentation is because, as you already know, communication through only written information is not the only skill needed in today’s world. Being capable of communicating your ideas in multiple ways using professional writing and presentation skills is critical for job and career success. Creating these multimedia presentations will help you improve your technical and communication skills, which will be used in any career you pursue.
Successful completion of this activity meets Module Outcome 5.
This activity aligns with the career competencies of oral communication, critical thinking, and digital technology.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Identify two specific commercials that speak to you and, in your presentation, analyze the pairing of emotion-provoking stimuli (possible classical conditioning) with products.
Your task…
Put together a multimedia presentation that will engage your audience and clearly teach them about how learning principles are used within commercials to influence buyers. Your multimedia presentation will utilize images, writing, and video and/or audio.
Your presentation can be completed in Powerpoint, Prezi, Powtoons, or another platform approved by your instructor.
Be engaging and professional!
For maximum points, your presentation must include the following components:
– Voiceover/video by you, presenting the information.
– Analysis of two separate advertisements, and the learning principles at work.
– Graphics/images and writing to support your presentation.
– Links to or embedded advertisements/commercials (the two you have chosen to analyze).
Your presentation should utilize images, writing, and video and/or audio (your voiceover, which is required). Your presentation can be completed in Powerpoint, Prezi, Powtoons, or another platform approved by your instructor.
Your video or presentation should be a maximum of 2 minutes long (one minute per commercial is a good guideline).

Learning and My Future
It’s been a great journey! As this course continues to evolve to meet the needs of the students who take it and the Excelsior psychology program, the feedback provided gives incredible opportunities for the School and College to learn from your experiences. For this final assignment, you’ll submit a short video reflecting on the most valuable aspects of the course and what you might tell a future student about the class.
Successful completion of this activity meets Module Outcome 3.
This activity aligns with the career competencies of oral communication and digital technology.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Please create a short (2 minutes or less) video in which you reflect on the most valuable pieces of the course as it relates to your future academic and career plans. You should explicitly share your thoughts on how to improve the course, and what you would tell another student who was contemplating taking this course.
