Reflecting upon your decision and motivation to pursue the MSW, describe how attending CSSW will enable you to meet your goals as a social worker. What are your immediate and long-term social work goals

The Columbia School of Social Work has a mission of interrogating racism and other forms of oppression, fostering social work practice, education, and research, and advocating for the expansion of resources, and capabilities for all persons to achieve their full potential. The MSW program imparts students with skills and knowledge to improve lives and strengthen communities in their roles as clinicians, researchers, and policy analysts. The mission and goals of CSSW align with my professional goals, both in the short and long term. 

My long-term career goals are to become a clinical social worker and establish a private practice focused on working with adults and couples. I believe that the MSW will afford me the necessary skills and knowledge to realize these long-term goals. My short-term goal is to work at the addiction clinic. I am focused on understanding the population’s needs and gaining more experience and knowledge on how to deal with people undergoing addiction, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and couple’s issues requiring couples therapy. The MSW at CSSW ensures that the students get hands-on skills through partnering with community service providers, advocates, and professionals across all disciplines to promote the development of effective policies, programs, and practices. I believe I will get impressive practicum experience that will be valuable for my current and future career goals. I am lucky to have some experience in practicum through a one year internship at the Samaritans Suicide Prevention Center, where I learned to provide quality emotional support, connect to people of every race, spiritual belief, ethnic background, economic status, sexual orientation, personal ability, age, gender, and gender identity.

I believe I am prepared for the MSW following my background in the field of social work and previous academic qualifications. I did my undergraduate at Hunter College, where some of the classes I took, such as clinical psychology and developmental psychopathology, influenced my career choices. During my undergraduate, I was impressed by the interventions and approaches developed to understand mental illness. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was one of the interventions that caught my interest, and I would like to explore it through research and practice with clients faced with mental illness. I attended DBT groups for two years, where I learned skills to deal with anxiety, relationship building, and setting and achieving goals. Psychodynamic therapy and ifs helped nurture effective relationships with people, understand self, and build lasting and meaningful relationships. Mastering such interventions and concepts is one of the main reasons for joining the MSW program at CSSW. 

Further, with my interest in working with immigrants, I have come to interact with people who have undergone various stressors and mental health problems, which I experienced first-hand as an immigrant from Ukraine. I faced loneliness and stress, and connecting with people was difficult. I am inspired to help such immigrants achieve mental health and deal with trauma and anxiety as they start living in a foreign nation. These experiences in life, courses, workshops, and knowledge from school have helped shape my career goals. I am focused on offering compassionate care to all clients, exploring the pain my clients are going through, and being there in the moment of their suffering, helping them find meaning and possible ways to overcome it. I believe it is the inherent nature of humans to want to be loved, to love, be part of a community, explore and create, and understand the inner world. I am focused on creating such spaces for my clients to lead a healthier life, a life worth living and with meaning. I believe that CSSW is the best place to harness the skills and knowledge needed to achieve my career goals.
