Jerry Sandusky, a former Penn State football coach and founder of the Second

Mile, was convicted of 45 charges of child sex abuse. “The indictment alleges that former

Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky used The Second Mile — the charity he founded in

1977 — to get access to and molest boys, “many of whom were vulnerable due to their

social situations.” (Ganim, 2011) Jerry Sandusky still had access to Penn State’s Athletic

buildings and took most victims to Penn State for training, etc. The actions of Sandusky

destroyed to perception of two prominent organizations, Penn State Football and The

Second Mile.

Impact

The Second Mile was the perfect pool for Jerry Sandusky to prey on children.

The charity was designed to help troubled youth, who normally came from low-income,

single parent households. Some of the children had absolutely no stability at home.

“Second Mile operates under the slogan “providing children with help and hope.” The

main goal has always been helping kids overcome whatever adversity the world has

thrown their way.” (Daniels, 2017) Sandusky’s victims found a sense of belonging and

security at the Second Mile and that made it easy for Sandusky to victimize the youth.

The impact that this scandal had on the community that surrounded Penn State

was huge. The Second Mile was designed to help troubled youth, normally from low

income, single parent homes, do good for themselves and keep them out of trouble. The

conviction of Jerry Sandusky on charges of child sex abuse ruined the charity, leaving

these troubled youth nowhere to turn.

Changes

Since the allegations aired, the Second Mile has been performing damage control.

Many key supporters and financial contributors have walked away, acknowledging that

they do not want to be associated with the charity any further. The community, that once

heralded Jerry Sandusky for his stellar work with troubled youth, has turned their backs

on the charity. Most people wonder who else knew about the abuse and stayed quiet. The

Second Mile, a charity so much larger than Jerry Sandusky, a charity that did so much

good for the community and helped so many troubled youths, has bee dissolved. One

man’s wrongdoing destroyed a striving charity that saved the lives of so many youths.

The Second Mile attempted to keep its doors open following the scandal, but

many financial backers walked away and lawsuits against it were filed. One lawsuit filed

against the Second Mile was by Penn State University. Jerry Sandusky, a former Penn

State football coach still had access to the Penn State campus buildings, which is where

most of the abuse occurred. Therefore, Penn State settled with well over 30 victims,

totaling more than $100 million dollars. Penn State’s lawsuit against the Second Mile, to

recover some of the money they paid out to victims was recently dismissed by the judge.

The Second Mile charity still exists, but in Texas.

Perspectives

The perspectives regarding race or ethnicity have not been affected by this

incident. Maybe, the idea of sending your child to a charity like the Second Mile for

guidance has been affected. The idea of sleep over athletic camps at Penn State and other

college campuses were affected. Therefore, funds coming into Penn State Athletics

suffered greatly.

Many alumni chose to distance themselves from the football team and have

stopped supporting them. Other alumni looked the other and have vowed to support Penn

State through it all.
