Environmental Justice Education Program in the South Bronx
Introduction
Environmental Health is the relationship between a person, and their environment, and how it contributes to the overall well-being and health of that person. There are many factors that contribute to one’s overall environmental health such as location and socioeconomic status. In lower-income neighborhoods, these issues tend to be more prevalent. Environmental Injustice is a very common issue in these neighborhoods due to the disproportional placement of toxic waste plants in these areas and the lack of care for the cleanliness and health of these people.
The presence of toxic particles in the air is more common in low-income neighborhoods due to the presence of minorities and poor people living there. This issue is very important as it can affect the development of children and individuals with underlying health conditions. Various types of illnesses, such as cancer and asthma, can be caused by the presence of toxic air pollutants. Some of these include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, asbestos, and particulate matter. These pollutants can have a wide range of effects on an individual’s health. Fossil fuels are known to release pollutants into the environment in different ways. One of the most common reasons for this is the burning of fossil fuels. Vehicles and trucks are known to release various types of pollutants into the air. Some of these include emissions from diesel cars and the breaking down of old building materials. In addition, some of the pollutions can come from improper waste disposal.
The lack of proper housing for low-income and minority communities is one of the main factors that contribute to high levels of particulate matter in these areas. These individuals are often exposed to harmful levels of pollutants, such as asbestos and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Policy
There is a lack of education and awareness regarding environmental injustice in the areas where it is happening. A well-designed policy can help decrease the exposure of people to these harmful chemicals and create a political movement. This policy would be a state-run program and would be designed to spread information as clearly as possible. This ensures that the data is easily attainable and easy to understand. Along with information about environmental health and injustice, there will also be information on what can be done to help fight the issue. This includes information about contacting local officials and politicians to create change. The South Bronx is known for its high levels of air pollution and improper waste disposal. This is the ideal location for this program as it will be able to spread awareness and education about this issue. If it is successful, more funding would be provided for the program to expand. Eventually, the program will be able to expand into other areas of New York City. It could also help push for the establishment of laws that protect the people in the South Bronx.
The state will be responsible for holding educational meetings in various public areas, such as parks, libraries, and senior centers. This will ensure that the people in the South Bronx can access these meetings. In case there is a problem with transportation, a link will be provided online to allow people to get free bus passes.
Besides holding events in person, the program will also be able to hold meetings online to make sure that the information is readily accessible to everyone. Funding will also be provided for advertising on various websites, and informational flyers will be placed in buildings in the South Bronx to raise awareness
Educational Content
This type of policy has been done in New York with organizations such as WE ACT. It has seen success in spreading information to the youth and adult residents in New York City through the use of free internet modules as well as getting the attention of policymakers to tackle environmental justice issues. This organization focuses on all of New York and tackles many different environmental issues so it can take time to create momentum. This program would focus on one area (South Bronx) and the education on waste disposal, outdoor air quality, and indoor air quality
Waste Disposal:
The issue of environmental injustice has been growing over the past two decades due to the increasing number of garbage disposal facilities in New York City. One of these is in the South Bronx, which is known for its high levels of air pollution. To avoid damaging these areas, high-income residents are asked to place their trash at the processing plants located in the South Bronx. Each day, around 6,000 tons of garbage is transported to these facilities. This amount of trash contributes to 1,400 truck trips through the South Bronx, which results in the pollution of the air and diesel fuel emissions. There are nine waste transfer stations and a scrap metal recycling plant in the area. This environmental injustice affects low-income and minority residents and poses a threat to their health.
Outdoor Air Quality:
In addition to the emissions from the trucks, air pollution can also come from other sources such as the construction and demolition of homes and the vehicles that pass through the South Bronx. Due to the heavy traffic and the number of garbage trucks passing through the area, the air pollution in the South Bronx has become the most harmful in New York. It has been reported that about 9 micrograms of fine particles are released into the air every cubic meter, which is more than four times the national average.
Indoor Air Quality:
Indoor air quality can have a significant impact on the development of respiratory conditions such as COPD and asthma. This is because of the various particles that are released from building materials. Many un renovated and old buildings, which are often filled with volatile organic compounds, are known to contain these compounds. Also, if these structures are not maintained properly, they can expose people to harmful asbestos. Due to the high levels of VOCs in the South Bronx, it has been known that the area has the highest number of asthma and childhood asthma cases.
Concluding Statement
The increasing number of garbage disposal facilities and industrialization have led to an increase in environmental injustice. People are now being exposed to more dangerous chemicals and pollutants than ever before. Due to the unjust effects of these activities on the health of individuals, various health issues have appeared in low-income areas across the country. This program would help educate the public about the various environmental issues that affect the residents of the South Bronx. It would also help build a stronger case against the garbage disposal companies operating in the area.
